We have a feral cat that will only eat cooked chicken. He was emaciated when we found him but has now gained back his weight and went from loose stools to normal stools. He also has boundless energy now and a good coat. But we worry if his chicken-only diet is ok for him. Any comments would be most welcomed. Thank you.

First , thank you for caring for this kitty .. If the ONLY thing he eats is chicken then no , that would not be a balance diet .

Have you tried  canned food ? Maybe you could try Friskies canned and mix in a little cooked chicken and also sprinkle a few pieces on top ..

Thank you for your reply. We give him plain cooked chicken breasts in small pieces. He just cannot get enough of it. When he hears the bag come out of the refrigerator he jumps to the microwave oven and pushes the start button to warm it up!! But he just will not eat other food or treats at all. We have two other adopted feral cats and they love Friskies and treats but not chicken! I will try your suggestions. Thanks for your help.

At least he picked something good to like . Chicken is actually good for him . Fancy Feast is another good canned food to try . A lot of cats can't resist it ..

Or you could try something like Tiki Cat Puka Puka Chicken. It is a balanced diet; but, is like shredded chicken. Weruva and Petsmart's brand of Simply Nourish chicken stew might be worth trying too.

Maybe put the chicken on top of some wet food to see if he'd eat it.      If you have a Petco in your area they sell a brand called Soulistic.    It's shredded chicken so maybe he'd eat it.

Do you think he is catching prey outside? THEN the chicken would be enough.
I'm with Di. If he's getting outside prey, then the chicken would just be treats. Otherwise, if he is indoor, just cooked chicken lacks the other nutrients he would need.

Really ? So if you have an outside cat that eats mice & whatever you don't need to feed them cat food ?

You'll want to add a vitamin/mineral powder made specifically for homemade raw food like Alnutrin (please see the raw board for more suggestions).  If you can use organ meats to create a more complete nutrition profile, all the better.  But if not, that's fine.  It's not uncommon for people with fussy or sick cats to add supplements to cooked meat and call it a day.  Heck, if it's 100% USDA inspected meat, it's still an improvement over most of the higher end canned foods.

The only drawback to this method is having to run the chicken through a food processor to mix thoroughly with the supplement powder.  And having to measure everything carefully so as not to skimp on nutrients or give the cat too much.  It's still worth it to get a completely balanced meal into kitty.
