Hello all. We recently adopted 15 week old sister kittens :). They both had upper respiratory infections when we got them and were treated. They also have been treated for fleas. Both have been tested for FEL and FIV and tests were negative. Last week, Rory had some green eye discharge so my hubby took her to the vet. She had another upper respiratory infection and also a small patch of ringworm. We were given eye drops and medicine for tHe ringworm. The next morning she didn't want to eat and would actually try to back away from her food dish. We took her to vet immediately and were given biomox to give her and she was given subcutaneous fluids as she was dehydrated. She also had a fever of 103. Later that day she started eating again and drinking too however still lethargic. This was Saturday. Today is Wednesday and she's still lethargic. She still begs for food when it's time to eat and follows me around like my shadow but won't play with her sister and sleeps most of the time. Hubby took her back to vet today and fever is still 103. She is up a tenth of an oz for weight and wasn't dehydrated. Vet gave her deworming treatment to be on the safe side. She also took X-rays which revealed a slightly cloudy spot in her belly however when she attempted to draw fluids out there wasn't any. She took blood and Rory is slightly anemic. She took more blood to send out to lab and we'll have results Friday. I of course am researching on the Internet and keep coming across FIP and am very concerned she may have this. Vet said it's possible but could also be other things as well. So just wanted to see if anyone had any similar experiences or any thoughts/ideas/feedback?? Waiting two days to get the blood work results is going to feel like forever. [emoji]128533[/emoji]

I wish I knew what to tell you.  I do know that it's extremely common for kitties in new homes to come down with an upper respiratory infection about 10-14 days after going to their new home.  She could have a secondary infection that's causing the issue or even feline herpes.  You could ask the vet to do a culture & sensitivity on any discharge to rule out the secondary infection.

I would love to tell you it doesn't sound like fip, but I can't unfortunately.

The key is whether the antibiotics have gotten rid of her fever, but it has not. This is a typically seen fip symptom.

There is dry, wet, and in between, which starts out as more dry then will eventually have some fluid, at least a bit in tummy/chest.

I hope this is not the case!!

I can imagine the stress of waiting an eternity to see the results, although they may point to fip, they may not, but doesn't mean it's not either...........

Hello, so sorry I didn't get back to posting sooner, been a crazy few days.  Unfortunately, when my husband took her for the results on Friday, the vet said that although she can't be 100% positive (as I've heard is difficult with FIP), she believes that it is in fact FIP.  She is basing this on the fact that she has non-regenerative anemia, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, together with ocular signs, fever not responding to antibiotics, and the peritoneal effusion.  She wants to see Rory again today to see if she can extract any of the fluid from the belly as she was unable to last week.   Rory is still holding on, she was eating great, drinking and using the litter box, however since yesterday, she's cut down on the eating and drinking quite a bit.  She mostly just sits in her two favorite seats (the footrest on the couch and the chair in the kitchen in the sun overlooking the yard) and sleeps.  She sometimes acts curious and will follow us around a little, but not much.  Her sister keeps trying to get her to play, however she doesn't seem interested.  We've had to move her sister Amy away from her a few times because she was starting to try to rough play with her as they did before and I'm not sure Rory has the energy for it and I don't want her to get hurt (although Amy has a little scratch by her eye which I think was Rory's way of saying she didn't want to play right now.)  I had to go to work today, so my husband is taking her in to see the vet.  I honestly don't know how long she has, I told my husband to ask the vet her recommendation on how long to let this go on, and I think I've made my peace with it if she has to be put down (not to say I haven't been crying like a baby off and on all weekend and especially when I had to leave for work this morning).  My other big concern now is how Amy will handle things if Rory passes, I feel so bad for her :(  Thanks for the support though, I do appreciate it :)

My heart goes out to you, I'll pray for a miracle, and if that is not to be, a gentle end. Give her a kiss for me, I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

My heat goes out to you and your kittens. Nothing I can say will make it better. It's an awful situation to be in. You are in my thoughts. Hoping for a miracle :vibes: :hugs: :rbheart: :vibes:

About Amy - Have you thought of looking into Bach flower remedies? There are specific essences to deal with bereavement. I've used them for various issues with my horses and they've been wonderful. I know they are safe and effective for cats too.

shadowsrescue shadowsrescue :help: I saw that you're trained in flower remedies. Can you say which would be best for Amy if the worst happens?

I would suggest Spirit Essences.  There is one specifically for loss.  https://store.jacksongalaxy.com/sto...-spirit-essences-loss-remedy?source=4-3320-11

Rescue Remedy can help now and it's fairly easy to find.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, prayers, and suggestions :)  Yesterday vet said that we should consider putting her down when she goes a whole day without eating at all, as yesterday she seemed happy even at the vet, she was purring and kneading the blanket in her carrier :)  Vet gave us some Hills A/D food to try to see if that helps at all.  She ate most of her serving of that yesterday when I got home, but was still super lethargic and had to be carried over to her dish as I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have eaten had I not put it right in front of her.  This morning she ate maybe one or two bites before "burying" it.  She seems even more tired today, so I fear that if she doesn't perk up at all today or won't eat anything else, that tomorrow may be the day :(

I'm so sorry I never responded to this!  Things got a little hectic and I completely forgot I'm sorry :(  I really appreciate your thoughts and taking the time to ask for an update :)  Unfortunately, we had to put Rory down on March 11th.  She didn't eat at all on that Tuesday before, and was super lethargic, only moving when my husband or I physically picked her up to move her.  (However, we did leave our bedroom door open that night, we usually kept it closed because they can be so hyper at night lol, but we wanted Rory or Amy to be able to come in and cuddle if they wanted.  Shortly after I went to bed, I felt a cat jump on the bed and I assumed it was Amy since Rory hadn't moved at all, but it was Rory :) and she stayed there and slept at my feet the entire night).   My husband took her that following morning and the vet said that we were making the best decision. She had lost a little bit of weight even since her last vet trip two days prior, and vet noticed that she was starting to show signs of being jaundiced.  She said that she didn't think Rory was suffering quite yet, but if we waited any longer she likely would start to suffer.  We had her cremated and are going to plant something in the yard that will grow back every year to honor her and will put her ashes there.  (by the way, any suggestions on something good to plant are welcome, since my husband and I are NOT gardeners and have never planted anything, lol).  Although she was only with us for 39 days, we were so attached, but it was a relief because it was hard to watch her keep getting sicker.  Amy seemed sad at first, following me around meowing a lot, however I think she sensed it was coming and she's back to her crazy fun self again :)  I think at times she wishes she had a playmate, but I also think she's enjoying being spoiled as the only kitty :)  We'll get her a playmate one of these days,  it's been recommended to wait a couple months and make sure that Amy isn't actively shedding the virus, but we'll definitely be getting her a friend in the future.  Thanks again so much for your thoughts, and again, sorry it took so long to reply :/

I'm so sorry, so heartbreaking, but at least Rory was comforted and safe during her time here.  As to her sister, they are a great lesson of living in the present - I'd love to hear about her future playmate when the time comes.

I am so sorry.  I am not a gardener but I did find this for easy to grow perennials.  I noticed peonies are on the list and they are beautiful, we had them at my childhood home.  If you go with peonies I would suggest placing them away from the house a bit.  I don't know what the deal is but they attract ants like crazy.

We have several avid gardeners on the site, maybe if you start a thread in the lounge you will get some suggestions from them.  http://www.thecatsite.com/f/2/the-cat-lounge

You can also wright a tribute to your kitten in the Bridge forum.  http://www.thecatsite.com/f/19/crossing-the-bridge

Very sorry for what has happened, FIP is cruel and relentless...........

The best part is how you both were levelheaded and kind, putting her well being first, as I know how hard it is to make that final/inevitable decision, which you made before she really started to suffer, and she would have, very soon.

If there are any doubts in your mind whether or not it actually was FIP, she had the classic signs in her blood tests from what you said.

It's often times much tougher of a call with FIP, which is torture for the owners, did they do the right thing, and so on, but surely the vet was correct.

Take care. I also have planted where the remains are buried, I have baby/miniature rose plants blooming as I type, for the little ones I've lost.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Thank you for coming back and updating.  Planting something in her ashes is a very special thought.  You could do something simple such as daffodil's.  My family did that once with a dog.  We buried her and then planted daffodil's all around.  It was beautiful each spring.

I purchased an outdoor plaque for one of my feral cats that died last year.  I found it on Amazon.

RIP sweet Rory.
