Hi,

I am probably over-worrying here, but one of my cats has severe anxiety as he grew up in a homeless camp.  A few hours ago he wasn't letting me sleep, so I gave him some of an herbal supplement supplement for anxiety in cats that contains valerian, chamomile, l-theanine, gaba, hops, passion flower and ashwaganda.  Around the same time I tried getting my other cat to take his prozac (he just started on this after 8 years of trying EVERYTHING I could think of to stop his inappropriate urination- but after having to throw out couches, beds, and more I just couldn't take it anymore and gave in on the prozac which I am so worried about :/)  since he avoids it unless he is starving and then will eat the pill pocket.  Well, I wasn't being very careful, and my other cat got a hold of it and ate it.  He started running around crazily, and now has mellowed out but seems a little out of it.  I'm worried- does prozac interact with any of those herbs.  Is it dangerous???

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, the only herb that's a big worry with any sort of antidepressants is St John's Wort...and that's as someone who's been on a lot of antidepressants! The only one worth checking is valerian. I know it's not good with valium, but I think you should be ok. If he's still off in a few hours maybe call the vet to be certain. I'd guess the herbal mix is fairly short acting? Be aware that valerian feels like a very low dose of valium (I've used both). That alone could be why he's spaced.
