Hello everyone on here. I'm new to this forum. I have two beautiful girls. A black and white tuxedo and a grey tabby whom I love with all my heart. The reason I'm on here is my fiance moved in with me about 3 months ago. He has severe celiac disease totally unrelated I know. Together we changed our diets to gluten free and lots of chicken and veggies. He was getting rashes on his body and worse over time. He ended up going for blood work for his allergies and it turns out that the cat allergy was so high it was off the charts. We never knew. He never sneezes or gets a runny nose the worst he gets is asthma which he already has had his whole life and he had cats when he lived with his mom. I love my cats so much and I could never part with them. He even loves them. My question is can a person die from cat allergies over prolonged exposure?

Welcome!

I have never heard of a human dying from a cat allergy. At worst, I've heard of major inconveniences like respiratory reactions or itching. I know some people (not all can) that have muscled through it and their allergies subsided because they were exposed to cats everyday for many years. Unfortunately, some people develop new allergies later in life as well.

If the rashes are small enough, he can try something like Benadryl cream on the problem areas, or take an over the counter antihistamine (Benadryl, Reactine, Allegra, Aerius, etc.) to see if that helps with the rashes. If the doctor didn't mention anything about exposure to cats being detrimental to his health and he's determined to stay with the cats too, may as well explore your options.

If it is a big concern to you, give the doctor a call and ask what the risks are if the continues to live with cats.

I don't think the prolonged exposure is an issue, but I'm not a doctor.

I agree with having him check into allergy shots.

I had a pretty severe allergic reactions to my two cats when I first got them. It took about 2-3 weeks, but I could eventually breathe around them and now I just need to make sure that I wash my hands after petting them before I touch my face. No guarantees that he will get over them like I did, but I wish you the best.
