I agree that those flea collars are very dangerous! Luckily you realized soon, and took it off as soon as you realized! The only use I have for these collars is to cut up and put inside the vacuum bag and it can kill fleas that you vacuum up.  You are better off with the tubes of stuff that you put on between the shoulder blades. You may want to get Advantage or Frontline FOR CATS ONLY type. Watch out for grocery store stuff like Harts, as some of their products are not too safe. Also, IF the neighbors do ever pay attention to cat, they won't know anything or anyone is doing something to the cat.Have you ever asked them about the cat? or maybe just keep an eye out on what they are, or are not doing. They may never even miss the cat, especially if they don't bother feeding her. Maybe she was just a stray to them at one time, and they really didn't want a cat around. Good luck, you are doing the best you can for now. And no, I don't think the cat will die or anything from wearing that collar for 1 day. Just keep an eye on her - especially if she has not been cared for. She could have worms or cat disease. She probably should been seen by vet at a clinic.

thank you sooo much you have reallllllyyyy helped me
I would have been sooo lost with you and I dont think they care for her
at all becuase twice I have seen her around 9 o clock wandering around going to the
back garden of their house and here it gets dark early so theh would have
let her in at around 5 but no they dont
she also look skinny so I continue to feed her she comes about 3 times
she has also came in my house a lot of times and she loves it but does go out
And are u sure that nothing will happen to the cat even after 4 months considering
the packed said all the fleas would be gone by then.
. ummm one more question soorrryyyyy can a fox harm attack or eat a cat becuase she
bes outside and we have foxes that come and go so I was wondering if they can harm her

Sorrryyy for taking soooo much of your time I hope I didnt bother u thank u sooooooooooooooooooooooo much

I don't know much about foxes...coyotes yes! A big fox might get into a fight, maybe trying to get food or protecting babies. If you can bring her in and keep her inside, all the better. Do you ever hear the neighbors call for kitty?         I would keep an ear out to see if the neighbor really has any real relationship with the cat. She might just be a stray that they may have fed once or twice, and really don't have any interest in the cat. In that case, I would consider the cat as fair game!  Have you ever talked to your neighbor? Do they have any other animals? You don't say where you live, but sounds kind of a rural area. Lots of people dump their animals in open areas like that, thinking the animal might have a better chance than taking it to the pound! You know cats choose their owners, maybe more than we choose them! You and your sister seem to have a lot of love in your hearts, and kitty will know where she wants to be...

Oh and about that 4 months thing and the fleas, it probably means that collar is good for 4 months. The drop stuff that goes between the shoulders (so cat can't lick it off and get sick) that  stuff lasts about a month.

Hey I talked to the owners and I found out the cat does get food but not that much
I think she gets fed only once a day I said to them that I feed the cat and she comes
inside my house but they were fine with it she is kept outside and I dont think I can keep her
in my house because I would keep the cat where I would sleep which is in the attic but how do i keep her inside
like a cat bed or a place where she going to stay in 1 area and no she is not a stray
she is just kept as a pet they live 1 house away from me and I live in a normal house with houses next 2 us in a lane
not like a rural area also I asked do you keep your cat inside and she said no it goes
everywhere its disgusting so maybe she used to keep inside but then she put it outside

Thank you

The flea and tick collar is meant to remain on the cat for four months. Without the cat wearing it for a long time it wouldn't provide enough poison to kill fleas, ticks, or cats. Don't worry about the four months thing.

Yes, foxes could be dangerous to a cat. If this one has been mostly an outdoor cat, she may know how to take care of herself, but she'd be much safer as an indoor only cat. Do you know whether she's been spayed? Is she wearing a collar with a rabies tag?

Thank you so much for trying to take care of this poor cat. I don't think much of her owners.

You are very welcome, and, yes, this site is incredible.

How old are you?

If this is your cat now, she needs a few things fairly soon. She needs a vet visit, and vaccinations, she needs appropriate flea and tick treatment, and, if possible, she needs to become an indoor only cat.

Most vets will give a discount for a first visit of a newly adopted cat; it's their way of encouraging people to adopt.

She's going to need one or more litterboxes, to encourage her to know that the inside is a safe place (hey I wouldn't feel safe in a place with no toilet available!). Be sure to keep the litter boxes a bit more full than they say, and clean them frequently. And no matter how frequently you clean them, be prepared for the cat to tell you that it's not frequently enough -- cats love to criticize. :lol3: And she'll need one or more scratching posts, to protect the furniture. Also, she will very much need some interactive play with you, if you're going to be her human now. That does not need to be expensive. Try crumpling some paper in a ball and throwing it for her to chase.

Can you manage all of this? Will your folks allow you to do this? Will they help you get her to the vet?

Actually, from the way you talk, 13 is about what I guessed.

I think you may want to put out some kind of shelter that this cat can get into, maybe with a blanket in it.

All cats beg to get out; they're fascinated by the birds and squirrels outside. Also, they're convinced that they can take on coyotes and foxes, and win. And that they're completely invisible in the dark, and that if the car can't see them it can't hurt them. Unfortunately, learning otherwise is frequently fatal to them. This is one area where their humans need to take control and make the decision for them, just like the decision to spay or neuter -- it's actually better for the cat, but it's not a decision the cat would make for itself, if that were an option. It's our job to feed and care for our pets, and their job to purr and play and catch vermin for us. I'm sorry to hear that, except for spaying, your neighbors aren't keeping up their end of the bargain.

I meant something like a doghouse so that she'd have a place to get out of the weather. Not something expensive, something you could build yourself fairly easily. And a blanket to give her some warmth on cold nights. But if she's coming in to your house to sleep, it's unnecessary.

So is a cat bed, BTW. Cats will sleep on anything, especially if it's warm. If you put out a newspaper folded in quarters, she'll say, "Oh, just my size!" and turn it into a nest. Have you ever seen an old fashioned radiator? A lot of hard tubes, next to each other, with space in between. And not totally round, either. Hard, and slightly pointy. I would never think of sitting on one, even if I weren't afraid that my weight might cause damage, because it would be too uncomfortable. But my Sweet Thing considered it to be the best bed in the apartment, because it was warm.

No a dog house wont do anything foxes come right to the front on the garden
they will definitely know theirs something in the dog house and especially becuase
I HAVE CHICKENS you properly never ever guessed that but foxes have been coming and going
in diffrent sizes and they know their scent properly but the chickens are fine
they sleep inside the house soo no fox can hurt them in anyway where as when its night
time like 9oclock the cat comes in my house then she goes straight in the kitchen
next to the garden door
becuase she wants to go home in her open shed to her bed so she likes to go late
but for her early to sleep. Anyways thanxz Margaret

Yes, I was just talking about protecting her from the elements, not foxes.

This is why it would be safer for her to be an indoor-only cat, but unfortunately, unless the owners give her to you, there's no legal way for you to do that, and these owners are so irresponsible that I don't think that's going to happen.

I'm very sorry to say this, but there is little you can do for this cat. I think you're going to lose her someday soon. In her memory, be sure to keep your own cats safe, once you're out on your own and adopting your own pets.

Oh, my dear. We all lose our cats. We do our best for them, feeding them good food, taking them to the vet, spaying and neutering, keeping them inside when we can, and then we lose them. I'm 62 years old, and I've lost, let's see, eight cats. They just don't have long lifespans. And we grieve for them, and then we get another cat, because we can't bear to be without.

This particular cat that you're trying to care for has incredibly selfish owners. They want to know that this is their cat, but they are unwilling to care for her properly. She has no collar, no rabies tags, fleas and ticks, and she's an outdoor cat in an area where there are foxes. I'm sorry, but the odds are against her. She is very unlikely to live out her full span.

I know you love her and are doing your best for her, but the owners have weighted the odds against you. And no amount of wishful thinking will fix that.

One thing you might be able to do for her, with your parents' approval, is to ask the owners if they would allow you to take her to the vet for vaccinations, and give her a collar with a rabies tag on it. Tell them that because she frequently sleeps at your house, you're afraid of rabies, so you want her vaccinated for your safety. If you look up rabies online, it won't even be a lie. Rabies is a horrendous disease, and the shots that humans who've been exposed have to get are extremely painful.

And, yes, you can make her time with you happy. Just don't be too surprised if one day you don't see her any more.

Hmmm. There is one other thing you can do. If the owners haven't provided her with a rabies vaccination, they're probably in violation of the law. Call your local ASPCA (I'm assuming that you live in the U.S.A.), and ask them about legal options.

Hi margret sorry for not understanding you earlier
I was a bit upset when you said one day
you will lose her but yes it is true
and thats the most hardest part of keeping
or looking after a animal I live the uk
england and I will try looking for a
rabies tag for her and about the vaccination
I dont think I can take her but
if she is spayed then she must be vaccinated

Also she doesnt sleep in my house she just comes in the day
Thank you margret oh yeah she has black teeth which would
only suggest she has bad teeth but I wanna find out how
I can treat that without going to the vet

Thankxz

The UK also has laws about rabies shots, more severe than those in the U.S., I believe. I don't know about tags. There are also laws there about animal abuse. I believe that in your country, you would call the RSPCA.

Black teeth are very bad. There are toothbrushes and toothpaste available for cats, though I've never had much luck persuading a cat to allow me to brush her teeth. Some cats love it, if the toothpaste is a flavor they approve of. I'm afraid that if they're rotten enough to be black, a vet visit is the only useful thing. They must be causing her a great deal of pain. I know first hand what it feels like to have a tooth break off when you bite something just a little bit wrong.

If you want to try to brush her teeth, check out some of the reviews on this site. I'm pretty sure you can get what you need from Amazon or eBay at a reduced price.
