Hi all,

I like to know if canned mackerel in tomato sauce mixed with rice or bread is good for a kitten about 3 months old? as its regular food intake. I do give it other items like chicken or other food from time to time, the kitten is suffering from seizures, i think, and i read on the web that green tomato are bad for kitten not the ripe tomato (red). I have posted a question on its odd behavior see link : http://www.thecatsite.com/t/293000/odd-behavior-do-not-know-please-help , i'm afraid that i'm hurting my kitten without my knowing. I stopped feeding it mackerel in tomato sauce. please provide info,

thanks a lot,

If that is all you are feeding that is a big no no, cats require taurine in their diet and they are not going to get that from mackeral.  They do not need rice, vegetables or bread in their diet either.  Cats are Carnivores and require meat in their diet, they lack the enzymes in their systems to digest vegetables, and grains so the rice and breads are not being digested by this kitten.  You said you are feeding chicken and other food, what other food are you feeding;?  The diet could definitely be causing the seizures in this kitten as if this is all you are feeding it is highly lacking in the proper vitamins, minerals and nutrients that a cat requires.  You need to get this kitten on a healthy balanced diet made for cats asap.

Here are a couple of links that may help you:

Fish should not be part of a cats normal diet, they can have it but it shouldn't be more than once a week if that.

No, it's not a suitable diet for a cat. Depending on where you live, there will be a variation of commercial pet foods available that are balanced for a cat's needs. Cats require meat-based proteins and a delicate balance of calcium and phosphorus. Too much or too little of either can cause a cat to get sick, and especially if your cat is already exhibiting some concerning issues, it's very important that you be able to provide a balanced diet. It's not as easy as just feeding chicken that we would eat, there are lots of vitamins that cats need in other organs of animals that go into cat food.

If you want to feed people foods, these should be reserved as a tiny part of the diet as a small treat (this includes canned mackerel or chicken and vegetables and such).

Others have given some great advice, and I'd just like to add that you may want to just stick with food made for cats. Was there a reason the kitty eats mackerel in tomato sauce? Such food is best given in tiny amounts as treats.

Thanks all for your feedback, I lack the info, i did not have a cat for a long time. I will change the food intake to cat food, i bought a canned cat food today. I will see if this will improve the cat health.

Any additional comments are appreciated.

thanks all.
