Hi there

I've been freaking out the past couple of days and Google hasn't helped me.
I got my 8 month female cat spayed on Saturday, I live in Thailand and my local vet ......well I was upset when I went into the surgery. It didng look very hygenic or very sterile. Before people say I shouldn't have brought her there its very typical Thailand and I live in the countryside.

Anyway she got upset getting her temperature taken her hair started falling out. When the vet went to give the anesthetic she got really upset and the vet seem (nervous) anyway it was horrible she clawed me and jumped off the table ran into a corner, the anesthetic started working and she slumped into the corner. I was really upset and worried because she was so distressed going under. I went back to collect her and he wanted me to take her while she was still asleep!!!! The incision was done in her side and like gauze was sewn in with the stitches. I have to bring her back in 7 days for the stitches to be removed.
Anyway got her home and she was so distressed I wasn't expecting this kind of a reaction. She cried and cried I ended up holding her and like gently rocking her to calm her. I was given no cone so I cut up a T-shirt and losely tied it around her.
She couldn't walk which I know is normal from the anesthetic wearing off. She kept falling and collapsing. She wouldn't eat or drink anything, I gave her a small bit of water with a syringe and some medicine and she vomitted.
She then climbed into her litter box and went to sleep, Itook her out twice but she went back in so i left her.
This morning she was still unsteady but seemed more alert. I've been giving her small bits of water from syringe and she actually ate a very small bit of cooked chicken. And I noticed she wasn't walking with her back legs properly like she was in pain?.
She's gone into her litter box again tonight
But she seems in pain [emoji]128542[/emoji]i don't know if this is normal or not! Just the experience with the vet worried me. Tomorrow morning (unless she miraculously eats tonight) will be 3 days since she's eaten or drank (apart from the little bits I've given her)

I'm just really worried she's so sad I feel awful for her! I'm wondering should I travel to another vet? I just don't want to distress her more bringing her in somewhere

Any advice or help will really be appreciated

Your poor cat! I've never heard of a vet releasing an animal back to the owner while still fully sedated. It's 100% normal to be woozy when they come out of sedation and to be falling over etc. Some animals do have a bad reaction to the anesthetic. My greyhound comes back from the vets after an op with colitis (stomach pain and bad and bloody diarrhoea). He cries a lot too. Your cat will also be in some pain just from the surgery. I've found (cats and dogs) that one arnica tablet every 6-8 hours can help with the pain/bruising. This was recommended to me by a retired homeopathic vet.

The bigger issue (apart from lack of sterility) is the vet seeming uncomfortable with what he was doing. It's really important that you have confidence in the vet you use. Maybe see if you can talk to another vet (without taking the cat at first) to see if you feel more comfortable with their approach? There's no point dragging the cat elsewhere only to find someone who is no better, or even worse!

I don't claim to have any veterinary training, but if I'd just had your experience I'd get a recommendation from someone I trusted if possible, and then talk on the phone before moving a cat in pain. I would be concerned about risk of infection etc though in this situation.

Hope some of this helps, and good luck.

Thank you! Yes I was thinking of speaking to one first, I want to get a cone for her anyway as she's already started licking (the T-shirt) so could ask then.
Just horrible ! and I've just taken her out of her litter box and she's gone back in again tonight

I would definitely get a cone to stop the licking and I would try to get her seen by another vet.  For a cat to have obvious signs of pain then they are really hurting because their survival instinct is to cover up being in pain.  A sick kitty is easy prey so they do everything they can to hide it.  She shouldn't be in this much obvious pain 2 days after being spayed.

hi, make sure the cone isn't to big to cause stumbling problems.  Their nice to have around for emergencies.  If their are no improvements, keep fluids in her.  Syringe her with water and I use a/d critical care canned food since it can be syringed here in the USA.  If her back legs aren't working and the conditions seems unsterile.  SHe might have an infection, but you need to get reliable advice that doesn't just drain your wallet.  I've mentioned this topic to friends and a forum on here before.  Meningitis treatment for cats could ward off any infection she might have gotten.  And the stitching I'm familiar with here don't need to be removed, they just dissolve away in the time needed.

I'll say a prayer for your baby,  God bless

Cats can get really sick if they aren't getting their normal amount of food intake in a day.  How much are you feeding her?  I would contact the vet and ask for pain medication for your cat.  She shouldn't be unsteady on her feet the next day after surgery.  Anesthesia usually wears off within 12 hours or so.  You really need to get some food into her, not just a tiny bit either.  Do you have canned food over there?  You can mix with water and make it soupy and syringe feed it.

She seems OK its middle of night here
I have pain killer and antibiotic for her I think maybe the pain was from everything wearing off after surgery. I couldn't give her pain killer the first night.

I've wet food, I moistened dry food and I got some roast chicken (which she took a small bit of)

I've seen her go up to the food and water but walked away.

I'll see how she is when she wakes up. Has any of your cats gone into their litter tray after surgery? She's never done that before, her tray has a lid and flap door, I was wondering if it was because it was an enclosed space and she felt safe

Just an update someone took me to an animal hospital about 40 mins away. Poor little thing was prodded a lot but I'm so glad I went. Her stomach was inflamed with bit of infection was so sore, they gave her fluids and 3 injections, checked her belly on an ultrasound which was OK. So she should be feeling betterI have to bring her back in tomorrow to get her medicine and check blood results.

They gave her a little coat to wear as well to stop her licking her wounds.
Just so relieved now hopefully she will be feeling better
