Well here we are again... Boo, my 4 1/2 year old male cat who has probable IBD starting flaring again last Saturday.

A little history : Pancreatitis in past (left and treated at vet), inflammation of gallbladder and liver in past.(Medication for 6 months)

Current diet until this last flare of diarrhea and appetite loss, Royal canin Dry Hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein (for almost 4 months) and a treat of Natural Balance Limited ingredient diet canned duck & Pea.

Took him to vet, examination revealed no abnormalties by physical exam. Bloodwork was not done only because he had just had bloodwork two months previous and it all looked really good then.

He was not dehydrated, not uncomfortable upon feeling his abdomen, etc...

Prescribed fortiflora for diarrhea and metronidozole (antibiotic) also for diarrhea, 3mg of pepcid once daily and given a b12 injection.

We also decided to try the Royal canin Rabbit in can from the vet again as we had tried it before several months ago.

Brought him home, he ate really well that afternoon and evening but later that night threw up the Royal canin Hypoallergenic HP dry that had the fortiflora over it that he ate some of.

seeing that I decided to try to keep the dry away from him, stick to the Royal canin Rabbit in can. This worked out ok, but the fortiflora was out since he threw it up with the food earlier.

I also decided to wait on giving him the antibiotic because vet said the antibiotic would help the diarrhea but could upset his stomach and that the antibiotic would also kill off some of his good bacteria. Since he would not eat any food with the fortiflora on it which would help with replenishing his good gut flora I was afraid of giving him the antibiotic.

Between just giving him pepcid, followed by 1/2 tsp of slippery elm syrup an hour later and just going with the RC rabbit in can his stools were looking better until two days ago when he decided he wouldn't eat the rabbit so I bought Natural Balance LID Venison & pea. He did eat this and I thought this just may work, WRONG !

Yesterday and today his stools are flat again, his appetite isn't really great.

Here's what I started this morning : Still doing the pepcid 3 mg, Started the Metronidazole, Had ordered a probiotic (Ask Ariel) Power probiotic, came yesterday afternoon, started it this morning, have cyproheptadine on hand as an appetite stimulate, picked up some more RC canned rabbit. I have been using the slippery elm one hour before or one hour after giving any meds or supplements , 1/2 tsp, twice daily. (I have not given any today yet)....

I am going to see if sticking with the rabbit only and doing the above makes any difference.

I have in the past tried Natural balance Duck & Pea, Nature's variety instinct Turkey LID, Natural Balance Venison LID, Addiction Rabbit and blueberries, Royal canin duck hypoallergenic canned, etc.... 2-3 months seems to be the breaking point of a flare up

However, I have to keep in mind that along with these he always had some kind of grain free chicken free dry cat food..

No Dry works, I am almost convinced Dry for an IBD cat is out ! I also think some IBD cats have problems digesting fats, which Duck and other protein sources like Lamb are higher in fat.

It has been suggested to also stay away from poultry, anything with feathers, any kind of beef, fish. It also has been suggested to stay away from Grains and any dry, non prescription food...that is not geared toward a cat with IBD

I haven't given Boo any food that has grains, stayed away from Chicken, only given him duck recently which is looking like a no no and we have stopped.

I have ordered b12, liquid, Methylcobalamin.... No additives, preservatives, only in purified water... This form of B12 is in it's purest form and does not have to be converted in the body . I have read in forums on the controversies of methyl versus Cobalamin and it's use for IBD cats and oral versus Injection, etc...Recently my vet told me that they couldn't let anyone take home and administer b12 injections to their animals anymore and bringing Boo to the vet only causes him more stress so the B12 injections are out for now unless he has to go to the vet , hence the reason for ordering the liquid B12. B12 is sometimes deficient in IBD cats and it also helps with appetite.

Boo also seems to be not able to tolerate steroids, he had them twice in the past and two weeks later developed Pancreatitis, another time, one week later he developed a UTI....

Raw, I am almost tempted to try Primal Pronto in rabbit only I can't acquire it anywhere near me so I would have to order it. Don't know if this product would help or not. some people have good results with this kind of diet, others not..

I don't have many choices left of "novel" Proteins, especially without higher amounts of fat or "feathers"... HMM, looks like brushtail and kangaroo might be the only go to choices I have left to try...

Please, if anyone has been through what I am going through with an IBD cat and can give me ANY suggestions, diets, etc... and have had success I would love to hear from you.

It is awful to see your cat miserable and you being stressed out about it doesn't help the cat either. He has not thrown up anymore since two days ago, thank God for that but he has flat stool and appetite is not really great.

Thank you.

Hi,

I'm sorry that you are going through all this with your kitty. It's a tough thing to go through, I know. My sweet boy never had diarrhea with his IBD, but he did have a couple suspected Pancreatitis attacks with flareups. When he didn't feel like eating I was able to get him to eat with the RC Recovery canned food. I tried the Hills A/D but none of my cats have ever been real fans of Hills food. The vet also put him on Mirtazapine every 48hrs when he was at his worst to help stimulate his appetite.

Oh, and my kitty was on the RC Hydrolized protein dry and after his last flare up wouldn't touch it again. I switched him to Purina EN and he seemed to like that. I know a lot of people say don't feed an IBD kitty dry food but when they aren't eating it's best to get them eating something. :)

I hope your kitty gets better soon!!!

Thank you,

Right now he seems to be doing better...Doing the RC Rabbit in can, giving him Power Probiotic by Ask Ariel and started him on liquid B12 methylcobalamin  (no additives or preservatives)...  haven't had to give him appetite stimulant for 3 days now and poo looks a little better....IBD, a very hard and stressful thing to treat, they are up, then they are down ...
