How do I help my two new 10 month old cats get along?

I have just got two new 10 month old rescue cats, one boy and one girl. They have both been neutered/spade. The male cat is constantly bothering the female cat, following her everywhere and she is constantly growling and hissing back at him. He is a very playful cat and she seems to like being alone. I'm not sure whether or not to just leave them to work it out or if they need to live in separate areas of the house for now. It has only been a day. but I can't find a concrete approach to this.

Last night was the first night with them, which was a nightmare. We have let the male cat roam the house and the female locked in the living room (with litter tray and food) but she cried all night long until my girlfriend went and slept with her on the sofa. I want to be able to let them both out and around the house but the female won't stop hissing and sometimes hitting him and he won't stop following her.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
