So I have a 1 1/2yr cat that I have neglected to spade-very unusual for me, as I have had all 4 of my other pets S/N by 4-5mths!! She is indoors & out. It is a very cold Iowa winter, all the family has been commenting on how 'fat' she looks- I've been saying her hair is thick. Then I noticed that the nipples 'she has never had' are there & where I pick her up under her rib cage,I can't anymore because of a pear sized buldge--?? Kitties?? The only odd thing I remember, is that about a month or so ago, she was gone longer than 24hrs & I was concerned. She came back filthy & reeked like a bunch of cats peed ON HER. I don't know if that's significant to any mating rituals or what. I would guess I have a early pg cat- what are your thoughts & should I take her to the vet??

Nothing early about it---most cats have their first heat around 5-6 months, and most cats in Northern climates get pregnant sometime between January-March for the spring litter, sometime in summer for the fall litter. I'm surprised she hasn't had a litter or two already.

Anyway, yes, if an unspayed cat has been outside, there's a pretty high chance she's pregnant. It would be a good idea to get her to the vet for prenatal care. If you don't want kittens you could do a spay/abort, but it sounds like she's at least 3 weeks along so your vet may not want to do it. Hopefully you're up for helping her raise a litter! Keep her inside after the babies are born, until she's spayed, because some cats can get pregnant again right away after giving birth.

It does sound like she is pregnant. Females can really smell disgustingly after mating, so the smell as if cats peed on her does sound familiar to me. But my cats mate inside (breeder), and so I'm not sure if for outside is the same.

The pear sized bulge does sound a little weird to me tho. If that's a kitten, she's far longer pregnant than just a month. Though, the nipples showing up is usually a sign around 3-4 weeks into the pregnancy. Showing start at 4-5 weeks. I think she's further along pregnant, maybe around 6 - 7 weeks? As you haven't mentioned anything about seeing them move. Around 7 weeks you should be able to see or feel the kittens move inside of her (Do note; if it's a small litter this might not happen)
