Hi Everyone,

I adopted a new sweet kitty about a week and a half ago. After taking him to the vet for a checkup I found out he has conjunctivitis in one eye. They did a PCR test and he tested positive for Mycoplasma felis and Calicivirus. The vet put him on Terramycin eye ointment 2x day for 10 days and also liquid doxycycline 2x a day for 10 days. He has some squinting in the sick eye, a little redness around his eye and a small amount of discharge. Other than that, no symptoms. He sneezed a few times when I got him home but he’s stopped that.

Here is my question, the only stuff I have found about Mycoplasma seems to indicate my boy should be on antibiotics for at least 2-3 weeks so I’m concerned that 10 days won’t be enough to really know if the oral meds worked. I haven't noticed a lot of improvement and today is day 7. Is there anyone that has had to treat their kitties for Mycoplasma and if so, how long were they on antibiotics? I have to take my sweet boy in on Sat for a followup and I think my vet wants to put him on anti-virals so just looking for more info before then.

Thanks so much!!

It sounds to me like the vet deliberately scheduled a follow-up for the last day of doxy treatment.  He'll evaluate his condition then and if kitty needs another course of doxy, I'm sure he'll prescribe it.  You can always take the initiative and ask if he should continue the doxy.  In my experience, vets usually factor parental concern into their decisions.

Hope you get some more feedback from those with mycoplasma experience.

I agree with @the3rdname that your vet will reevaluate and decide if further antibiotic treatment is needed. I suspect the antiviral your vet is considering is Famciclovir. I've used it many times.

One of my cats had a horrible Calici/Myco infection 3 yrs ago. He was extremely ill, much more so than how your kity sounds. The front part of Tyson's nose sloughed off and he developed a mucous plug that sent him into renal failure (not to mention a temp over 106.)

Tyson was on a combination of steroids (for fever), Doxy, and Famciclovir for 15 weeks. That is how sick he was. So. There is no one protocol for the illness and it all depends on the severity. For Tyson, he went from being "fine" to critical in less than 8 hrs.

Hoping your baby makes a quick recovery!

Thank you both!

Yeah what I thought was weird is his vet wanted to see him back after 7 days but the meds said to take for 10 (my vet wasn't working the day the results came in so another vet called me). I'm only going in on day 10 because of scheduling. I guess I'll know more on Saturday, but for now trying to get as much info as I can. :)

Thanks again, and CatPack I hope Tyson is doing well!

I have been unsuccessful treating my Ragdoll's mycoplasma (constant runny eye, some sneezing) with antibiotics. Had a couple of rounds of antibiotics which helped  little. Once discontinued, however, the symptoms returned. Any ideas for improving his immune system to fight the bacteria? My second cat, a Maine Coon, also has mycoplasma without symptoms.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
