Hi all,

My last old girl is now 17 and had surgery a few weeks ago to remove her remaining molars. She now only has her front canines and proudly displays them. I didn't think she would make it through the surgery and had to syringe feed her for about 2 weeks. Now, with the help of mirtazapine, she is eating - although not as much as I would like. She has lost weight and has slightly elevated kidney levels so a food to deal with these issues is high on my list. She has been soley a pate eater for years but is not interested anymore - I'm guessing because it sticks to her gums. What seems to work is the chunky foods. She loves the gravy and just swallows the chunks whole. I still leave out kibble which hardly gets eaten. In the past, I would have never allowed in the past this but now is a different story.

My first thought is just find anything she will eat. Secondly, a more fattening (higher carb) and low phosphorus (kidneys) food is desired. I've tried a number of foods selected from Dr. Pierson's chart at www.catinfo.org and found she prefers the Science Diet Mature Tuna chunks in gravy.  It is high in carbs and low in phosphorus. I know the high-carb food goes against Dr. Pierson's recommendations but I cannot find any other alternative.

I'm hoping someone can give me their advice and/or recommendations on foods to try for my girl

Thank you so much for your time

Just a thought, but if you are trying to fatten her up, maybe a food formulated for kittens and pregnant cats would help?

Kitten formula worked well fro my senior, he loves it! Compare the labels though, there is a WIDE variation on the levels of the ingredients between brands. I too had to find something with less protein. I didn't want to stress the kidneys either. All the luck!
