Does any one know a good way to treat burns and scalds?

I poured boiling water over my hand the other night. (Silly girl!)

I kept it under a cold running tap for about half an hour and then in a bowl of cold water for a few hours after that. It's turned a dark red/purple kind of colour but it hasn't blistered and the skin isn't broken.

What's the best thing to put on a scald like that?

Ooo, that must hurt like crazy!

It sounds like you don't have anything more than a first degree burn (lucky!).  You could use some aloe vera based moisturizer and take over the counter pain killers if it's bothering you.  Perhaps cover it for a few days in some gauze to protect it.  If it starts to open, blister, etc. see your doctor asap.

Hope this helps.  Even minor burns can be incredibly difficult to live with at times.

I can imagine how much that hurts. I agree about keeping it covered as much as you can, simply to stave off infection, should it blister (I don't think it will at this point). Other than Advil or some other pain reliever to help with pain, I think you're probably doing about as much as you can. If you have an actual aloe plant, break off a leaf and put the salve from the plant on your hand.

Get some Milk of Magnesia and put a thin layer on the burned area.  Don't rub. Let it dry and reapply as needed. Try and keep the hand dry and away from water.

I know this works for relatively fresh, non-blistering burns, because I use it all the time.  I first tried it at the suggestion of a doctor I worked with when I had a burn on my hand from one of those lamps on a food heating table in the cafeteria. Despite icing, the burned area kept getting larger. Anyway,   I thought he was nuts, but I tried it.  Within a couple hours the burned area had shrunk and by the next day you couldn't tell I had burned myself at all.

Given that you said you burned yourself "the other day", I don't know if it will work in your case, but it can't hurt  to try :)

You did all the right things! Sometimes people put ice on a burn which is not a good thing to do, the cold running water for at least 10 minutes is the way to go.

Now go to your doctor as ask for silver sulfadiazine cream. That stuff is a miracle - it heals burns super-fast! Use it now and keep the rest for the future, just in case. I am a bit of a clutz and I cook every day so I get burned now and then. This cream is amazing, no infection, no blistering, no scarring, the burn just heals right up within a couple of days (instead of a couple of weeks).

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I went to the pharmacy today to see what they had. @Natalie_ca  can you imagine the fun I had trying to describe Milk of Magnesia to a Japanese pharmacist?

I managed to find some cream with silver sulfadiazine in it. I got a stack of gauze and stuff in case of any future mishaps. Glad I'm not the only one who's a clutz in the kitchen,

@SwampWitch  I can't even make a cup of tea without maiming myself.

I'm more amazed that you found silver sulfadiazine in Japanese but not Milk of Magnesia.

I can't even make a cup of tea without maiming myself.

My cousin gave herself a server burn making tea; to the point she was out of work for several weeks while it healed and she had to visit a burn center.  Oh; she's a nurse.
  Accidents happen!

I hope you get some relief!  I got a friction burn on both my index fingers and both my thumbs in a technology class when I was in Middle school.  It hurt a lot!  I haven't forgotten that pain.

I got the feeling they had their own version of Milk of Magnesia but decided not to let me have any.

It's my own fault for explaining what I wanted in such an odd way.

"It's a medicine for your stomach. For when you can't poop. No, I don't want the syrup of figs one. I know it's good but I'm not going to swallow it. I just want to put it on my skin....."

They gave me the kind of look I haven't seen since I tried to use my big sister's ID to buy beer.

The cream I got is working really well, maybe not scarred for life after all.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts guys.

Im glad the cream is helping!! Sometimes these injuries remind us how much we use our hands!
I think I learnt a valuable lesson.

I had a few hours free in the evening and a choice between a glass of wine and a movie or a cup of tea and some yoga.....and I went for the tea and yoga.

Bad choice! If in doubt always go for the wine.

A really, really big part of me feels I should disagree...

Hope it's mending well.

But a little part of you suspects I may be right?

It's healing up nicely, thank you.
