Strange tail wound

Hello. My cat is always leaving the house to go in his adventures. Yesterday (he was missing for a day - which is unusual) he appeared with his tail down and a little swollen. He would't let me touch it so i knew he was hurt. Just today i realized this big wound.

He is always licking it... Is that good for him? Will he be able to get through with it by himself. Any medication?

Should i use Betadine?

What do you think happened to him? Dog? Another cat? Tail stuck in some thorny bush?

It's hard to see the wound well in those photos, however, regardless I'd be bringing him in to see the vet.  You have no idea how this happened, he could have been bit by another animal with health issues, could have gotten stuck on something rusty.  Hard to say but all would require medical assistance, especially if it's on the large side.  He may need antibiotics or stitches.
