Rocky had a biopsy done yesterday, and he has to wear an e collar for about a week! We tried leaving it off under supervision, but he keeps trying to lick at his incisions. My main concern is him being able to eat and drink with it on- he just ends up pushing his food and water bowl around.

My second concern is that his sister, Bijou, has been hissing and growling at him ever since he came back. They've been together since they were super young kittens, and have always been best buds. Has anyone had this sort of thing happen before? Could Bijou just be frightened by the  e collar he's wearing?

Thanks for your consideration, your comments are appreciated.

Have you tried putting him in a onesie? The make them for animals. Amazon has them but you can probably rig one made for a human baby to fit him. That way it's covered but he's still able to eat, drink and sleep with no discomfort.

my cat is wearing one like this he eats and drinks better in this type, the traditional type( cone shaped )made him walk funny and caused the other cats to hiss at him . this kind has a soft sleeve with a blow up inner tube and Velcro closure it's fully adjustable.

I hate e-collars for cats and think the Onesie idea is better.  The other helpful thing is when the vets will prescribe and dispense decent pain killers because if the cat is not feeling pain at the incision site, he/she is a lot less likely to lick it.  I use this for all spays and any adult neuters I get done, but the kitten neuters usually don't need it.  Their parts are so small that they are not left with much pain and they don't even have stitches.  I'm not sure how big your cat's incision was or where it was, but most cats are much more confy with sweaters and T-shirts than e-collars.  As for eating and drinking, you can take the collar off for that unlesss you have one that is very difficult to use.  The new ones close with Velcro so they are easy to remove and put on, a worthwhile investment.  I own one but probably have not used it in a couple of years.  Even my girl with the amputated front leg didn't bother her incision because she got pain meds twice a day which kept her comfy and a little sleepy.

I have one like this as well put away just in case I ever need it. I'd try the onesie route before I used it though. I do know people who have used a onesie with very good results

That looks to be a lot more comfortable in comparison to the large plastic cone type, I will see if they have any at our local pet supply store. I don't know if the velcro will hold up to the escape attempts he is making right now, but hey it's worth a shot.

Rocky has 5 incisions. He has 1 on his chest, 2 on his belly, 1 in between his shoulders, and 1 at the base of his tail. I don't know how painful it might be- the type of biopsy performed was a "punch" biopsy. He seems to be in a chipper mood now, but apparently cats are good at hiding pain.

Thanks so much for all the replies! Rocky has managed to work out a method of eating from his dish with the cone on, though he makes a lot of mess while doing it. The water bowl is something else, I've been letting him drink from a cup frequently though. Bijou still seems to think he's a strange monster, but we'll see what happens after the cone comes off.
