Hello,

I have 2 Cat's now as I have my Granddaughters kitten  for a while, until her mother moves. The kitten (6 months ) is eating my Resident cat's food  I can not keep the door closed or the resident Cat will not be able to access his food or litter box. So trying to watch the kitten Can't watch ALL DAY!  Would feeding times work, because I just always left Zazzy's (resident cat) food out all day and re freshen his dish as needed, and for dinner add 1/2 can of wet to it. The new kitty is on Iam's and zazzy has been on meow mix tender centers, and fancy feast wet. So now how do I do this, do I make feeding times if so how often, should I slowly make it so they eat the same food?  I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THIS, my son posted (for me) asking if we can possibly move zazzys bowl up high, eventually charlie (new kitty) will be able to jump up, plus not fair zazzy has to jump up each time he want's to eat. So again timed feedings? up high? change food? PLEASE HELP WITH THIS , IM GOING CRAZY TRYING TO ALWAYS WATCH CHARLIE.

THANKS

Timed feedings are much preferred to leaving food out all day for cats to feed on.  There are some links at the top of this forum to read on this subject.

I have 2 kitties that if I left food out all day one of them would eat it all before the other one got a few bites.    I feed once in the morning when I get up.  Then I'll give them a bit more before I leave the house.   They'll eat again once I get home from work and later one more time before I got to bed.   All in all they get about 7 - 8 oz of wet food a day.  They are young kitties who are active so you have to base your feeding amounts on your kitties activity level.

Good luck

I know how frustrating this must be for you!!  Are the two cats getting along?  Be sure to watch that one isn't bullying the other and both can use the litter box without getting attacked.

Without being there and seeing the whole dynamic of the two, this is what I would suggest.  Do as many timed small meals as you can.  Hopefully someone is there during the day so this can be done.  The kitten is only 6 months so he will need to eat more then Zazzy because he is still growing.  Feed Zazzy where she normally eats and then possibly feed the kitten in another room if the two don't get along. If they do get along and the kitten can stay out of Zazzy's food then it would be ok to feed on the other side of the room, but if the kitten is obsessed with Zazzy's food then it would be better to separate them during meals.  You want to eliminate as much stress for Jazzy (and you!) as possible seeing as this is not a permanent situation.  Start feeding small portions every two hours in the beginning and see how this goes. Remove any left over food when they are done. Then slowly feed every 2 1/2 hours and gradually work up to where you and they are comfortable.  Timed meals are a good thing because it will give you an opportunity to make sure that Zazzy is not stressed and eating what she should be eating.

I know this sounds like a lot of work and it is in the beginning so don't strive for perfection.....just progress.

Thanks, I  always just kept alot of food out for my zazzy he just eats when ever he want's his dry at least , and I give him  fancy feast wet at  dinner time with his dry.  I eventually want to have them on the same food, so I am putting small amounts of zazzy's food  in with the kittens. I want to do it very slowly for his little tummy.  But I do not want him to have the wet food, until he is used to zazzy's dry food, and his stool hardens a little, it's a little loose. So if I put zazzy's dinner up in the evening will he find it , I can put it on the washer, as their food bowls are in the laundry room. Just want to know if zazzy will be able to locate it?
