HI , we just added a new kitten to the family , for now , until his mother gets her new place. I live in a tiny apt with one cat. I am a SPOTLESS PERSON,  and I can't and do not want to ever change that!  This place is about 800 sq. feet TOTAL.. One litter box was not bad, but this new one is HORRIBLE, and it's on the other side of the house , because he is new to the home. His B.M. stinks VERY BAD, and it lingers for an hour, air fresheners just mask it, and you smell poop and freshener. YUCK!!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS ? My resident Cat does not stink like that, this kitten's food is Iam's  my zazzy's food it just meow mix tender centers, and 1/2 can of fancy feast for dinner.  What kind of food is best for this kittens B.M?. Plus it's a little loose.( but he had been getting into zazzy's food. but I take him away pretty quickly.   So question is What is the best food for stinky B.M. and to make it not so loose?

THANKS SO MUCH

This sounds a lot like my cat (He's 3, but I just adopted him a few months ago).  He would always have loose stool and it was extremely smelly.  I live in a 600 sq ft apartment so I feel your pain! Not sure about your cat, but my cat's stool was also not a normal brown, it was lighter and orange-ish.  I eventually realized that he was grain or gluten intolerant.  I started him on a grain-free wet food, and a couple days later, his poop was completely normal and not super smelly.  So I would recommend trying a grain-free food.  If that doesn't help, I would scoop his poop right away if you can - I put my cat's poop into a grocery bag and then put that into a garbage can outside.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
The kitten needs to see a vet and have a fecal run. The vet needs to be told to look for giardia as it is not part of a regular fecal float.

I would put the kitten on a bland diet of just baby food for a week even though it is not a balanced diet, and add probiotics: something with 5 billion CFU of L. acidophilus in it split into two doses, half in the am and half in the pm. You can use a human probiotic you get at a vitamin shop or health food store.

I agree with what LDG said about probiotics. If the fecal float comes back normal I would definitely add Probiotics as it sounds like this little guy might have some out of balance gut flora. I use human probiotics on my girls whenever they need them, I find the Pearls brand works great. They are tiny little balls which are perfect for pilling cats with, since my girls will not eat food if anything is mixed in.

I also recommend, if possible, getting off the grocery store dry food. IAMS, Meow Mix and Fancy Feast are all pretty empty nutritionally and contain a lot of stuff your cat cannot digest, meaning more and stinkier poop. Grain free is the way to go, and while the bags of food may be pricier, you end up feeding less of it and your cats will stay healthier which ends up saving money. Also a lot of the higher quality grain free food are formulated to be appropriate for both cats AND kittens meaning you can feed your adult and kitten the same food...again saving money.
