My black cat turns brown in the summer due to sun exposure , but not on the head and paws. They stay black. Does anyone know why? Her mom is siamese, could it affect why?

I think I heard somewhere that the colour pointing seen in diameter and other breeds is related to temperature - the colder the area, the darker the colour. So the cat gets warmer = the cat gets lighter. The extremities like paws, ears etc will be the coldest/lose the most heat so they stay darker longest.

I believe @cicoccabim is correct. And I'm certain it's nothing to worry about.

I´m not worried about it, just curious! It looks strange with a brown body and a black head......

I am fostering a medium long haired cat that is basically black but brown underneath and on the backside of the britches with a  light brown patch under the chin. I don't think your black cat has "points" which also come with blue eyes as my other all black short haired cat also bleaches out to brown in the summer but not on the head and/or legs, tail etc, just on the main part of the body. That's just where they get the most sun as they also turn over when snoozing and don't like the sun in their eyes. Don't worry about the brown, you can keep him out of the sun or you can just wait until fall when his fur will start turning black again.

Except, you don't want to keep him out of the sun. Not only does he really like it, cats need sunshine for the same reason humans do -- for the vitamin D. The oils in their fur create it from sunlight, and they ingest it when they groom.
