I have an appointment with the vet in 48 hours because one of my cats has been doing the scoot after every trip to the litter box this weekend. It's been coming and going for a couple weeks so I assume her anal glads need expressed and she just can't get them to release this time. Is 48 hours to long to wait?? She's a little lethargic, still eating and drinking but not as much as usual. At what point does this become an emergency? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

You can express the glands yourself at home. There are YouTube videos of how to do it if you want to give it a try. You won't hurt your cat by poking and squeezing around back there but your cat most likely won't like it very much. It can be a little messy and horriby stinky so do it in the bathroom and wear old clothes.

Otherwise I think your cat will be ok until the vet appointment as long as she eats and drink and uses the litter box normally. You can ask the vet to show you how to express the anal glands.

PS:  I would take her to the vet, myself.  Not that fond of home diagnosis.  She could have something else.

No, they've never been expressed before but it's gradually getting worse so I'm guessing that's what needs to happen.

We've not seen any sign of worms so I'm not really concerned about that. I just didn't know how toxic this could be if left unattended and she couldn't get it taken care of herself.  She seems a little more lively this morning so I think we're going to wait until her scheduled appointment but she's going regardless ... need to figure out why this is a recurring problem for her!  Thank you all for your responses!!!
