My cat is a little over a year old and she's pregnant. I noticed she was pregnant a few weeks ago (I was planning on getting her spayed this month). 3 days ago (February 12th) about noon she jumped up on my desk while I was sitting there doing homework and would not stop meowing unless I was petting her tummy (which is extremely unusual for her she has never jumped up on my desk). About 10 minutes later a bit of blood came out and she started licking her privates. I assumed at the time it was her mucus plug and that she would be going into labor soon. However 3 days later and no kittens. She seems fine, no signs of distress and she's eating just fine. I'm not exactly sure when she got pregnant either. This is her first litter and mine as well. I've been losing sleep every night (which I don't really mind) bc my entire house is tile and I don't want her having them on the tile floor. I do have nesting boxes set up throughout the house and she favors two of them. This waiting is terrible!

I guess I did not have a specific question in that post. Do you think that was her mucus plug? Is it usual to lose a mucus plug and still not have kittens 3 days later? I just don't know what to do. Other than the fact that she seems fine and is eating fine.

That is not the most usual, but it happens yes.  So its no birthing sign.

The plugs safeguards no bacteria comes into her.  So losing the plug increeases the risks.  But these risks are surely worse for homeless cats, living in dirty conditions.

It doesnt seem to be dangerous, more than theoretically, for home cats.

Do you feel the kittens move? how long had you felt?  You are apparently where you expect her to deliver any time now...  But the waiting game is common!

You can rub her tummy even more, if she allows.   It helps her with the oncoming delivery.

And yes, I agree with you, as long as she is fine, no visible problens, etc, you can wait and see. No need for panic.

I will send some of our usual links, but you are of course welcome to report and come with further questions.

Good luck!

Hmm, this does sound like her mucus plug. Did you notice a clear (with a pale yellow tint), jelly-like stringy thing, along with the blood? Are you still able to feel/see the kitties? Is she still eating normally? As long as she doesn't seem in distress or pain, I'm pretty sure everything is okay. However, if notice her vaginal discharge turn to a greenish/brown colour, have a vet see her immediately, as there could be an infection or a deceased fetus.

Keep a close eye on her, and keep us posted! Good luck.

All I really noticed was a bit of blood come out and then she immediately started licking so I could not see anything more. Yes, I can still see and feel the babies move. I noticed the babies moving maybe 2 weeks ago. She seems more inclined to sleep in her nesting box, only getting out occasionally to wander around and eat. She seems to prefer to be near me because out of all the boxes I have around the house for her she chooses the 2 near me. During the day it is right near my desk and at night it is in my room. I sure hope it will be tonight . Does anyone know how old the kittens can be before spayed and neutered? I would like to get this done before I adopt them out to their forever homes.

Oh and another question I had was every now and again when I stare at her (which I find myself doing all the time now lol) I see what I think may be a contraction but then I don't ever see another one. Is this maybe prelabor when she is getting the babies in position for actual labor?

Oh wow! With this information, I say hard labour will occur soon! She will have practice contractions, which will help position the kittens. During these pre-labour contractions, are you noticing her push with each contraction? How many has she had so far?

I've noticed a maybe 3 or 4 but they were spread out over the last 2 days or so. I did just notice one about an hour ago which is what prompted my question.

Sounds like precontractions, its not active labor yet.

But its surely nearing!

Some red colored discharge isnt unusual, but we dont want real blood.  Not more than a few drops anyway...  Be vigilant if it repeats / becomes worse.

As always, if you feel in your gut somehting isnt right, contact your vet, most vets answer phone from their patients.  Some even answers Q from patients to be.

She is such a pretty girl, wow!!! She will have beautiful little kittens. It seems like she is going the same rate as my sweet cat! They might go into labour at the same time. I definitely believe that it will be soon. :)

Stefan ever since I noticed what I think is the mucus plug I have not noticed any other discharge at all. Thank you for your advice though, it is greatly appreciated!

Thank you, Quinn. She is a beautiful girl and I love her soo much lol. I sure hope it will be soon! I feel so distracted with her being pregnant! I should be sitting here getting work done and instead I am looking at her every few minutes and if she is not next to me I am getting up to search for her. I swear this is the most stressed I have been lol.

Aww thank you very much! She's like a child to me, sweetest cat I've ever known! I cannot agree with you any more, I feel like I'm going into labour FOR her. I have all her things ready and set up for her. I really hope it's soon, it's always so exciting! I don't think she could possibly get any bigger!

I think mine is only going to have 2 or 3
http://www.thecatsite.com/content/type/61/id/259303/width/200/height/400[/IMGHere is one. She doesn't have much of a belly. I think she is only going to have 2 or 3[/quote]

Wow! Her markings are just SO perfect, I adore her. Her sweet little belly is so precious. There could possibly be 4 in there. They are so small when they come out, it's crazy! Like little baby mice. Do you know how many weeks she is? Or roughly when she got pregnant?

I know I love her markings too. They are actually the reason I got her in the first place. My daughters cat Andy which was an all black kitty which she got on her 3rd birthday because my friend found him and it looked like someone had been putting cigarettes out on him (people make me sick) so we adopted him and had him for 4 years until one day he never came home which was unusual for him because he would go out for a few hours during the day and then come home every night at the same time. Needless to say we were heartbroken and I did not want to go through that again with another cat so I told my daughter we were not getting another cat for a long long time. Anyway a few months later one of my friends cats had kittens and she was the only non totally black kitten and we got her.

Anyway as to when she got pregnant I wouldn't have the faintest idea. I was not really paying attention to her heat cycles because as I said earlier I had planned to get her spayed with my tax refund this month  (had an appointment set and everything) But I would assume it was maybe mid to late December? I feel like such a bad mommy for not getting her spayed sooner and then again for not knowing when she mated. But I will fix it with this litter she will get spayed at the earliest time she can and I will fix the kittens before they are adopted. Depending on how many she has I just might keep them all. Just have to talk the hubby into that one lol

At my shelter we spay/neuter at 8 weeks or 2 lbs. Personally, I think this is way too soon.  It is not supposed to hurt them but in the future I am going to push it to 2.5 lbs just to be sure.  More important for females to weigh more.  Not sure the shelter would want me keeping them longer than this.  I think 12 weeks is a good time.  Don't wait too much longer as I have seen a lot of moms that are almost kittens themselves.
