Hi guys,
After a very long and bumpy road with tritrichomonas, my vet has finally decided to treat with ronidazole. However, I just received the compounded capsules and realized he ordered the same dosage for my five and eight pound cats. The prescription is for 150mg, which seems a little high considering everything I've read says a safe dosage is 30mg/kg. I want to trust my vet, but after several ineffective drugs I'm not so sure I should. I just don't want to overdose my fur babies on such a dangerous sounding drug. Does anyone have any experience with ronidazole in capsule form??

I am bumping this back up,  I know there are a people here who have used it and hopefully they will see it.  I have read about it and I would be concerned also be concerned.  I have even read that people should wear gloves when handling it.  It's too bad that it is the only drug that is effective against this parasite.

Back in 2007 my cat, Pipsqueak, suffered with Trit. Feotus. He was about 8 pounds at the time and only 10 months old. His dosage was 90 mg. This was given for one month. And, I believe a two week break and then another month. He was cured after that. I never treated my other cats either. I don't think it is really contagious but more if the immune system is weak. I also believe, if I remember correctly, the drug was in tablet form. 150 mg. does seem a little high but maybe because your cat's are adults? Not sure though. I hope this helps some or hope that other's come along with their experiences. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I can also do a quick search to see if other threads old threads come up on the medication.

Thanks, yeah I called my vet and he said he thought their charts said they both weighed 8 lbs, though my little one has never weighed more than 6. So that's frustrating. However, he still believes that with being 5 lbs, she needs 100 mg. I got the pharmacist to double check on the dosage for me, so I'm waiting for a call back from her. I'm just very very frustrated. Perhaps its time for a new vet...

I know it's important to trust your vet.  It took me awhile to find one that I trust.  I still google things though even though I trust the vet that I take my kitties to now.  I think I do it mainly for my own info and also anyone can make a mistake.

Thank you, detmut! That makes me feel much better. I'm still going to wait for the pharmacist to give the OK, but I feel better giving 100mg to my 5lb cat now. We've been dealing with smelly, messy diarrhea for the last six months so I really can't wait to see them get better.

The pharmacist okayed it and both my ladies are currently being treated. Even though it's only been three days, my little one Minnie has been going much less frequently. It would not be uncommon for her to squirt out small amounts of diarrhea ten times a day, now we're down to about four. So that's an improvement. However, my other cat has had solid poops until she started the drug. Now she has runny stools. Would starting them on probiotics be a good idea?

Yes, I just successfully treated my cats and the new protocol is 30mg/kg given once daily for 14days. I had capsules as well , I just made sure the capsules were put far back in the throat held the kitty's mouth closed and rubbed her throat until swallowed,  always avoid letting them be chewed,if the cat chews the capsules they are very bitter ,and kitty will foam and spit.  I bought a piller, a long skinny tube that shoots the pill down the throat with air also. I had a lot of guidance and advice in treating tritrichomonas foetus  and preventing reinfection from Dave Dybas www.highgait.com who co wrote a paper with Dr.Jody Gookin who  first discovered ,researched and developed the treatment for TF. you should read her owner's guide to TF treatment at www.cvm.nscu.edu/docs/personnel/gookin_jody.html. this provides detailed info on dosing, litter box cleaning etc ALSO higher doses have greater risk of neurological side effects watch cats for signs. you can email Dave he is very knowledgeable and experienced  treating TF and is open to answering questions and giving advice someone on this site referred me to Dave thank goodness.
