we rescued a kitten in October and got her spayed last Wednesday. Its been about 6-7 days and she hasn't eaten anything in the last 24 hours. I took her to the vet for fluids but I need to get her to eat. does anyone have any ideas?? I'll try anything please!

My 9 month old kitten recently adopted wouldn't eat when I first brought her here.  The first thing I got her to eat was meat only baby food. Vet said that gets them going sometimes and then they'll eat other stuff.  Also the Fancy Feast Broths proved to be popular.  Those are just a treat, not for long term, but it is something to start with.  Be aware though, mine appears to have gotten addicted.  There are also Bonita Flakes (you can get at Petsmart or other pet stores) to sprinkle on top of the food. Some cats go for that.  You could also try carefully putting a little dab in her mouth. I had to do that with a cat once, and usually just a taste would get her eating on her own.  Oh, the other things they suggested is a little of the canned chicken, or just cook your own plain chicken, or tuna in water.

Good luck! It's scary when they won't eat.

Plain meat baby food (no onions, garlic, or veggies), Fancy Feast, or Science Diet a/d from the vet are great choices for when kitty doesn't want to eat.  It wouldn't surprise me if she picked up a little upper respiratory infection at the vet, so keep an eye on her.  Also, cat's can develop a condition called Fatty Liver which can be fatal if they go without eating for a day or so.  Good for you for being more concerned about your cat's lack of appetite.  Sometimes, though, when a cat's had IV fluids, they are less likely to eat because their body has that "full" feeling.

Thank you that was so helpful! She's been just nibbling but that's probably because of the fluids. How long would that full feeling last from the fluids for you know?

Usually, the full feeling from fluids lasts about 12-24 hours, depending on the cat.  If it gets too severe, ask the vet for an appetite stimulant.

Just be careful to make sure she keeps eating...........cats get hepatic lipidosis very easily and going without food sometimes less than 48 hours can start it ...........not trying to frighten you but hepatic lipidosis can be life threatening...........I don't know of any other way to say that and make it less frightening for you.........but don't want you to face the alternative.............just make sure she is eating something and enough of something a lick of food here and there is definitely not enough you can look this up on yahoo cat groups just type in hepatic lipidosis or cat not eating many knowledgeable kind helpful people there.
24 hours max then start assist feeding.............blessing...........

Yeah, "she'll eat when she's ready" is not a good vet answer. Vets should know better. After two bouts with fatty liver (one nearly killing my cat) I don't mess around anymore. I have a few feeding syringes and sick food here, and if the cat goes more than a day without eating no matter what I try, he's getting wrapped in a towel and syringe fed.
