What is the meaning of putting a stone on a loved ones tombstone.  I've seen this in movies and read it in books and am curious to know why.  I checked it out on Google but it wasn't very clear,  maybe someone here can be more specific, thanks.

You know I hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it.   I hope someone has the answer.  I have seen it in movies.

Hi LaRussa.

We put stones on the headstone, as a way of letting others know we visited.  They represent, sort of, "eternity".  Meaning they never fade or go away.

Jews do not typically place any kind of decorative object on a grave site.  No flowers. I've never seen it.

So, the stone acknowledges our presence to the site.

We also do not plant flowers, only evergreens such as yew/ivy.

EDIT:  I put dried apricots on my mom's also LOL.  She loved them, and it's my own special way of saying hello to her.  I'm sure birds pick it up the moment I leave, but it makes me feel good to do so.

Thank you, now when I see this in a movie or read it in a book, it will have more meaning to me.

Leaving a stone is an ancient Gaelic custom as well.

I always leave a tube of bright red lipstick on my mum's grave when I visit (even though I couldn't stand it). She never left the house without a huge smear.

I leave Lindt truffles on my father's grave sometimes. He really loved them. Sometimes they are even still there when I go back. :lol3:
