I have a 15 year old cat who has been given antibiotics for condition but it doesn't seem to work. He has severe discharge in one eye and his second eyelid has been partially shut for 3 months. Vet thought it was his tooth or cancer but test cme out negative. Has anyone seen this before or know what it is?

What was the condition that he was getting antibiotics for?  My Sadie was diagnosed with URI and put on antibiotics.  A couple of weeks later her left eye was partially closed and had a discharge coming out of it,.  Took her back, more antibiotics, it cleared up and then a couple of weeks later the same thing.,  Took her back and my vet told me that she is just one of those cats where the URI virus is always going to be present and that unless kept under control would keep on flaring up and she could lose her eyesight.  At present time, every 3rd day she gets a drop of dexamethasone sodium phosphate eye solution.  Have had no flare ups since that time.  I know, a long story.  Has your vet checked out his eyes?  I Did your cat have an upper respiratory infection?  There has to be some kind of infection going on with his eyes.

Thanks for your reply. Sid was diagnosed with some access and infectuon. in the beginning the one eye closed and he was sneezing a lot. He stopped sneezing but his eye remained partially closed and then his cheeks swelled

The abscess may not be healing and could still be infected especially when you say that his cheeks are swollen.  When cats have an upper respiratory  infection there is a lot of sneezing involved and the eyes can get involved in this also.  Drainage and eye either closed all the way or part way.  I would ask your vet about both possibilities.

Sometimes trying a different antibiotic will help. Were you using oral antibiotics or eye drops? Sometimes antibiotic eye drops with a steriod in them will be needed for the swelling.

What is the antibiotic being used now?

This is not standard for his age, I also notice drool on his mouth.

I see the swelling in his cheek, it makes his nose look off set.

He's had a thorough oral exam?

Has he has the herpevirus?

Thank you everyone. This is a tough one. Seems the vet is only prescribing antibiotics and steroids only when he was not eating. He is a good eater and drinker. It's been tough on the little guy he is an older cat and driving to the vet is taking a lot out of him. I'm afraid his owner is feeling it's near the end for him and doesn't want to put him under anymore medical exams. I just want to put it out to the public to see if anyone has seen anything like this.

It shouldn't be the end of the line for him if the vet is doing his job.  I am assuming the antibiotics was for the abscess and if Oscar wasn't prescribed the right antibiotic for it, it's not going to heal,  Sadie never had her cheeks swell up.  It would be easy enough for the vet to check out a couple of the possibilities.  That is if he or she is a decent vet.

I know-I just hate to give up here.  If nothing else,  google symptoms of an abscessed tooth in cats.  Google symptoms of how URI can affect a cat's eyes.  These can be easy fixes if taken care of.  I know 15 years old may sound old but there was just someone that came on this site and his cat was 23!!

This is not life threatening, but definitely needs some attention.

If your vet isn't good/thorough enough to see she needs meds, then find another vet who is more in to helping.

Her face certainly can't feel good swollen like that, nor her eyes.

And the drooling, she's got some pain happening and needs help.
