I am happy to join this site. I used to read posts from this site to get health advice for my Immmenence. My Immenence is almost 18 years old. I inherited Immenence from a neighbor after he passed away back in 2005.
Immenence was an indoor/outdoor cat before I inherited him. He is currently an indoor cat.
I found out Immenence was FIV in 2005 after I took him to the vet to find out why he had sores on his body. The sores looked like pimples with a yellow head. He no longer has them. After I found out he was FIV, I made it a mission to try to build up his immune system and fight ear infections aggressively.
I started out with giving him 1800PETMEDS vita chews once a day for several years and then stopped when he lost a lot of weight. His spine became prominate. I was afraid he also had hyperthyroidism and he was getting too much phosphorous from the vitamins. I haven't taken him to the vet as much because of costs and I was afraid to upset him. I wanted Immenence to be comfortable.
I have also used NatureVet Cranberry relief for urine tract issues and to boost immune system. To fight ear infections, I used 1800PETMeds ear wash and Zymox ear solution. I also purchased Vetri Science L-Lysine chews a few months ago for backup just incase he had any respiratory problems.
In the last few months, I found the benefits of virgin coconut oil. I have also tried massaging the inside of his ears with virgin coconut oil, which has helped. I have also given him a 1/4 teaspoon of it orally once a week.
In the last few weeks, with the help of a friend who paid the bill, I took him to the vet again because of a large bald spot on his left side. I first thought it was just a skin infection or allergy. My Mom thought it was cancer. It looked like a bald spot with a black scab, but it was smooth and flakey. I put virgin coconut oil on it a couple of weeks before taking him to the vet in hopes it would help it heal.
The vet said it was a skin abscess. She also said he was in the last stages of renal failure and he has hyperthyroidism. She gave Immenence an Excede injection for the infection. She also gave him sq fluids and sent me home with lacted ringer injection, 7 needles, and 3 60 ml syringes. She also gave me Epikatin, Metoclopramide, & Famotidine.
I have recently bought other supplies online such as butterfly injector sets, Vetri Science Renal Essentials supplements, and Nexabiotic probiotic. He also has Derma Strength chews that I give him.
I have recently taken him off of his meds because he has had diarrhea. I been giving him 1/2 capsule of Nexabiotic in the morning with his food, 1 Derma Strength chew, and 1 Renal Essentials chew. I was also mixing pumpkin with his food. He normally consumes 3/4 to 1 can of wet food per day. I only give him wet food.
I stopped dry food about 3 years ago after finding out it leads to urine crystals.
I used to feed him Friskies, Fancy Feast, and Nine Lives, but have read horror stories on the net. This last year I switched to Halo and Dr. Fosters and Smith wet food. I buy poultry wet food. I read that fish has too much phosphorous and iodine.
I have given him table scraps such as steak or chicken. Since his kidney failure diagnoses, I haven't given him any table scraps. He is drinking water.
I spend a lot of time researching for the best products and ways to care for my cat.
