Does anyone know how quickly struvite crystals form?  Does it take an hour, a day, a week, etc.?

Here is why I ask:

My cats have been eating Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon dry (they get wet food daily, too) for several years with no issues.  My dad's cat passed away, so he gave me all of his food, which was Nutro canned.  I fed it to my cats just a few times, and my 2-year-old male Prince Romeo (a.k.a. Romie) simultaneously developed struvites and a bacterial infection.  My vet told me that grain-free was bad for him, put him on RC S/O, and then told me to switch him to a food with grain.  This flies in the face of everything I've ever read, I am a big supporter of grain-free food, and I feel like these prescription foods, while addressing the medical conditions well, are simply junk food.  I do not want to keep him on this food.  I feel very strongly that it was the Nutro, but I can't find any information on the 'net that says how fast struvites form, so can't say definitively that it was the Nutro.

Anyone else had bad experience with Nutro?

i don't have personal experience with this. however, my brother's dog did develop a urinary tract infection (not sure if struvite crystals were found) after eating nutro. i'm not sure about particulars as far as how long it took to develop the UTI.

my brother and i were actually talking about this yesterday, as i mentioned to him that i'm serving my two cats some nutro canned cat food. but i'm only serving my cats one flavor of nutro as part of their rotation of 14 different flavors/6 brands of wet cat food.

I do wonder about the grain-free dry food. Our last cat, who ate a combination of wet and dry food, developed struvite crystals within a couple of weeks of Orijen being introduced into his diet.

Before I settled on BB, I did a lot of research regarding ash and magnesium levels.  My vet said a lot of cats *don't* do well on BB, but mine have been fine (and I'm talking the Wilderness Salmon and Chicken, not the rest of the line, of which I've not tried).  I'm beginning to think that it's completely cat-specific, whether they do okay on one food and not another...  I don't think we can throw out blanket statements on one food being okay, and another not, you know, when it comes to urinary issues?

...also, the research I've found online is pretty dog-specific when it comes to Nutro and struvite formation, although I did find one post that said their uncle's cat instantaneously developed struvites when eating Nutro...

Im convinced that my dog continuously has developed struvite crystals after being on nutro again.  The vet put her on rx food but i believe its the nutro which she won't be going back to.  Where have you found the research of the connection between nitro and struvite crystals?
