Hi there,
I need some help and advice outside of the box here. I took my kitten of 8.5 months old for a general health and dental checkup today. They found a lump inside his mouth which the vet referred to as looking ulcer like, she prescribed him an antibiotic for a week and said if it hasn't began to clear up within the next few days they will have to do a biopsy for him on it and discuss treatment later if need be.

My question is, what is likely hood in it being cancerous? I asked the vet and she was very vague and said she hoped the antibiotic would help. But to bring him back. She said she couldn't guarantee it but age is on his side etc. He still eats properly, doesn't appear to be in any discomfort, still plays, does his toilet business okay and eats his treats, wet and dry food as normal. She said he is othwise healthy and his lymph nodes didn't feel inflamed or anything either either. But I am worried beyond my wits here. I have grown so so so attached to my baby. I had a concert tonight and when I was out all I could do was cry because I am so worried. I will do whatever is best for him and not myself, always. He will always come first. But, I just need to ask if there may be something else people have experienced personally and it turned out to be something other than cancer? I honestly am worried out of my mind. He is treated like our child. Is there anything I can do to help him? I am giving him his antibiotic twice daily as advised, he is fed kitten pouch good morning, tea time and evening and biscuits for lunch. He has cat milk maybe once a week and fresh water 3 times a day. He has plenty of playtime and hugs. Can I do anything else?

Thank you so much in advance.

Not that I could see. It just seemed a bit red and a big lump in that area I managed to take a picture of. The vet mentioned cats can carry flu like viruses and this can happen with it but I haven't noticed anything changed about him at all. He just has this lump. His teeth on the bottom jaw are pressing into it as the lump is on top so the lump has teeth shapes engraved in it. So it doesn't look like a round lump, it's just a big lump with the teeth markings if that makes any sense at all? The vet described it as an ulcer like lump and to try the antibiotics first before biopsy. I'm just worried. And also wondered if the chances at his age if cancer were rare or common. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

It sounds like you are doing all that you can at this point and have to endure the passage of time to see if the antibiotics work.  Although it's easier said than done, try not to let worry about what it might be consume you as worry changes nothing.   As a cancer survivor myself and having had two cats with suspicious lumps, I've been through the "finding a lump and having to wait to find our if it's cancer" experience multiple times.  One of the cats had a fibrosarcoma in a vaccine injection site which was terminal and the other one had a benign lump and is now 11.5 years old.

I am not an expert but I believe it's a good thing this oral mass was found incidentally rather than after symptoms began.  The cat being very young is also likely a positive factor.  The following link may be helpful.

Best wishes for a positive outcome and long life for your precious kitty.

It looks similar to a gum lesion my cat had from the herpes virus. He also had a lesion on his lip at the time too. It got infected and eventually went away with time and antibiotic treatment. I don't think its very common for a cat your age to have cancer especially mouth and gum. I would of course follow you vets recommendations. There are other reasons to biopsy other than cancer as well so I wouldn't worry too much at this point.

Yep he has been fine for awhile. I hope yours gets better quickly too it could be just a dental infection from something he bit into or something related to stomatitis as well. I've had both issues in other cats as well. I know it's hard not to worry about it being the worst but your kitty has age on his side [emoji]128512[/emoji]
