So I'd mentioned Dustbunny's problem in my intro. He'd had a seeping abscess for a few days and because of it I'd kept him inside for about two days. I had to wait till today (Saturday) and take him the Emergency vet as my vet closes before I can get to it.

$400 later I learned he is FiV positive and anemic (24%).
They cleaned up his wounds and gave him a 2 week shot of antibiotics. I declined a urinalysis for his brown urine as they were already giving him antibiotics. I have no idea if the FiV is related to his injuries or if he already had that. I wanted to wait till my tax refund went through to get him vaccinated and neutered. Then mother of all Timing, this happened. The instruction papers say his blood needs to be checked on Monday. I'll have to call in the morning for an appointment.

I don't make that much money. Technically I didn't have to even file my taxes this year. I don't know if I'll have the money for what all he'll need.

To top it off my AC has been out for like um...2 years? It's winter now so it's no big deal as my heat works but this summer it can get pretty hot in my house. Some of the ceiling fans no longer work either.

So.... I'm not sure what to do.

Oh and to top it off I'd kept him at my grandparents for like 2 days. Without their permission... I know I know. But in my defense I had him in the bathroom where it would be easy to clean up any messes. It's not my fault their door won't click shut and he got out and made a mess on the carpet. It stinks too. So yeah I house-sat and it smells like cat mess. I bought the Bissell kit with the black light and enzyme cleaner. Hopefully that'll get the smell out. He also pooped on a tote bag. Thanks kitty.

My Gran was NOT thrilled. She had one of blank monotone emotionless voices when I told her. I couldn't quite get through to her why Dustbunny can NOT go outside anymore. She was just all that cat was not worth that (she thinks I spent 2-300), and when he's better you'll have to put him back outside.

I don't get it. We've had cats before. It's been years since we had an inside cat, but still. My Gran seems to be the type where unless it's her's she doesn't really care. My family is of the rabies shots and spay females variety. Also if you see a sick animal don't touch it. Just leave it alone.

Her theory/motto/whatever you want to call it is cats have been around for thousands of years. Cats take care of themselves, and I just...

I can afford food, not the best food, I can afford litter. I'm just not sure of the medical expenses associated with an FiV cat. I'd like to keep him, but I'm willing to give him to a better equipped home if need be. I don't think we have no-kill shelters here and I don't know what policy shelters have on FiV cats.

I have no idea what to do.

Hi Elistarial,

It sounds like you care about Dustbunny, which is good. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't realize what a commitment pets are. They can get sick and incur a lot of medical expenses. I'm sorry you're going through this.

Can you ask your Grandma or any other family members for help paying for Dustbunny? If you care about Dustbunny, they should care enough for you to help if they can. There is also Care Credit. You can borrow money through Care Credit at most vets. If all that fails, you should try to contact a no-kill rescue group in the area to see if anyone can step in to help you. Of course, you cannot expect someone to do that. It's possible someone might be able to help you. Animals are like people in that they can get very sick and have ongoing health problems. They are a very big commitment.

I can tell you really do care about Dustbunny. I will pray that you can get him the help he needs. I wish you the best. Hugs. :vibes:

Dustbunny is doing well. He's still on the porch (enclosed) at my grandparents' house. They're starting to like him more.  My Gran has taken to calling him Stinkbug. He was neutered on Monday and his blood levels have gone up. We have to schedule another check up in a few weeks. He's not allowed in the house just yet. He still stinks.
