Its been tough moneywise lately, i spent $200 on my new cat to get her vaccinated, and $200 on Kitty as she recently got sick.

Now Elsa, my new cat, i was told she has hookworm. My vet suggested putting her on revolution, which i did, a month ago. He said this would kill the worms.

However, i noticed Elsa seems to be hungry ALL DAY. lol I know she is a street cat and probably feels a desperation for food. But i still worry she may have worms still. She also licks at her butt constantly.

Not sure what to do, i cant really afford another vet visit so fast after the last two vet visits. When i took Elsa to the vet, i ask for a broad dewormer but the vet kept wanting to sell me more revolution.

I found another vet that is just awesome and did not try to sell me anything during the visit, which was refreshing. But just the visit alone is $60. Then i would have to pay for the fecal, plus the worming pills.

Did the second vet give you the same diagnosis? From what I've read, hookworm requires at least two treatments, and the vet should provide enough medication to do that. My puppy had coccidia, and I had to have her stool tested several times, but my vet just had me drop off a sample without needing an office visit. I still had to pay for the testing and additional medication, but only the first office visit.

For future vaccinations, a lot of shelters, like the Humane Society, or ASPCA have their own limited service vets that have vaccination clinics, or some pet stores also hold vaccination clinics. If my cats or dog have been to the vet recently for other things and don't need to be seen for anything else, I refuse to pay for the cost of an office visit just to get vaccinations. The vaccination clinics basically just charge you for the cost of the shots.

The second vet, is the vet i took my sick cat Kitty to. I havent taken Elsa there yet.

thanks for the advice about the vaccination clinics, i had no idea about that.

So, you think the revolution might clear it up by the second month? Or should i save up and take her to the new vet i found?

I haven't dealt with hookworm personally, but I foster for a rescue organization and they use Revolution for fleas and ear mites. For roundworms, they use Strongid, and for tapeworm, they use Drontal. I just asked my contact about hookworm, and they also use Strongid for that. They rescue feral cats, and they tend to get heavily infested with every parasite there is, so she has a lot of experience with treating worms. She says oral dewormers are much more effective than Revolution. Since you have a relationship with the second vet, you might just call and tell them that your cat was already diagnosed, but you'd like to get some oral medication and they might just sell it to you without a visit. Or call the original vet and tell them you'd like an oral dewormer instead of the Revolution

Yes, the vaccination clinics are great. Both the local shelters in my area have them, and Petco also has them, I believe twice a month. Our Humane Society charges $12 per shot.

That's interesting - I knew Walmart does some people vaccinations, but I had no idea they did pet vaccinations.
I saw it on a flier in the entrance, it only had one date, so perhaps this is something new they are trying out.

I don't where you're located but if you google "pet vaccination clinic" with your city name, you'll probably get some hits. The two shelters we have here have their own vet clinics, they only offer spay/neuter services and vaccinations, but the clinics are quite nice and a little easier to deal with than standing in line at a pet store with your cat carrier(s) in hand.

Good luck with the worms! One of my current fosters was heavily infested with roundworms, so I'm doing three rounds of Strongid with him just to be safe. Very icky to see them wiggling around in the litter box!
