I'm in the process of looking for a Siberian breeder when I came across one who says microchipping can cause cancer. She had a link posted, so I visited the site, but it looked like a bunch of bogus if you ask me. I know that any kind of vaccine can cause fibrosarcomas especially in cats. Does anyone else strongly suggest not microchipping your cars for this reason? What are your thoughts?

I think I read something like that too. With pretty much anything, there is always some risk.

For me, it was important because sometimes my babies' collars come off and I was worried about someone letting them out one day by mistake. For me, I really wanted them chipped.

You have to do the research and weigh the pros and cons. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Good luck!

It's possible but is extremely rare, according to WebMD -
Q: Have studies found an increased risk of cancer  in pets with microchips?

A: There have been animals that have developed tumors  at the site of the microchip. It’s incredibly rare, compared to the millions and millions of animals that have had microchips implanted in them. It’s an incredibly low risk, but it can happen.

People have to weigh that small risk against what can happen to their lost pet.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, myself. I think the benefit outweighs this very minimal risk.

I don't understand how some people can think the consequences outweigh the benefits of microchipping. You can always have tumor removed, but you can't always get your cat back if it gets lost.

I think people get so scared about everything these days. We always hear about the worst case scenarios and not from all the people who don't have any issues. That's why it's important to do the research ourselves.

I'm not sure if you already know this stillstending, but there are a few different chip companies out there and they all seem to have their own pros and cons in terms of what you pay when and whether you can update your address, ect.  Some have ongoing fees if you want to be able to update your address, such as Home Again.  I think another is a one time fee.  Check this out before you decide which one to go with so you don't have any surprises.  Different vets use different brands. It has been some time since I had chips put in.  I don't remember all the details.

Good luck!

Thank you! I guess I figured there had to be different companies out there, but never thought they'd be different from each other. I'll definitely be checking into that.
