There's a feral in my colony I haven't TnR'd yet because I've been working on ones I can handle or adopt. That being said, this cat was born under my deck and we're familiar even though I can't handle him. A couple weeks ago I saw him limping. Then he disappeared. I assumed the worst. Two days ago I opened the door and he hobbled into my I was able to trap him in my room. So now I have a severely hurt cat whom I can't touch Locked in my bedroom. The best I can do right now is give him Grapefruit seed extract in his water and L - lysine in his food. He has a URI because he's been licking the pus and an infection is coursing through his body so his resistance is gone. I used to have a mobile vet who would work with me but he recently passed away. The guy who took over doesn't know me from Adam. I nothing in my bank account. :/

Main thing here, he seems to have voluntarily chosen to seek help from you.  Its a very big step!  You cant handle him as now, you say.  But if you manage to save him, he will be socialized at the same time.  The big window of easy socialization open awide again, now and here.

We do have a paralell thread about an emaciated, weak cat.  I think you can take much inspiration there.

The fact you cant handle him as now, doesnt matter the whole world as he still manages to eat himself.

Re the vet:  Phone this new wet, and tell you had a much fruitful cooperation with his precedessor, whose districts he got.  Play it by ear, he should almost get the hint, and offer home visit to you, and give you if not big discount, so at least, some credit allowance for a time.

And you raising money?  Try and ask your neigbours, friends, relatives...  When asked with a good reason, they practically cant refuse, at least a smaller loan.  Even if they normally dont talk much with you.

Tx a lot for caring!

Good luck!   @misstorri

@catwoman707

Ps,  he surely needs antibiotics,  I hope Catwoman has some tips and advices on where you can get yourself suitable antibiotics, if you dont have access to a vet.

But  semiferales are usually more sturdy than home cats.  They must be, they wouldnt even survive kittenhood if of not good wood.

So I want to hope he will manage anyways, if he has it warm, comfy, unstressed, and knows he has friends around.

Be sure he has enough with fluids, and warmth.

Hi,

I think from what I can see, and the fur missing means it was swollen before it finally broke open and is pussing/oozing now, that what you have here could be an infected bite wound, due to his not being neutered.

As you know, unneutered males can and will do ALOT of damage to protect their territory and mate. They don't share!

I have seen the worst..............eyes ripped on and blinded, unbelievable damage can be done. Not to mention will spread fiv and felv. He must get fixed ASAP.

Hopefully this is exactly what it is, his licking actually helps it believe it or not, not so good for him to be ingesting but it will clean it as it drains.

That is the key to healing, it must continue to drain, so licking it will also help keep it from scabbing over, which causes it to be unable to drain the infection, it backs up into their system causing bigger trouble.

It will take a good week to finish draining and begin to heal up.

This will be an excellent time to get his butt in and neutered :)

Otherwise he will encounter that same bully guy, and be hurt again. Those hormones won't stop him despite being injured.

Just provide him with a good sized litterbox, fresh water and food. He should do fine.

If in the rare case that it gets very swollen again and red and he starts acting unwell, he will need antibiotics, but hopefully that won't happen.

Thanks so much for caring.

I can't tell---where on his body is the wound?

My vet says that as long as it's open and draining, antibiotics aren't needed. If you could handle him, I'd recommend cleaning the wound with a washcloth daily to keep it open. But if he's taking care of that himself, I guess that will work too. It may end up looking worse before it looks better, because at some point the dead tissue will start sloughing off (eww), but as long as the infection is draining away it shouldn't become life-threatening. Keep his environment/bedding extra clean so that his wound doesn't get re-contaminated, and keep getting good nutritious food and plenty of water into him so his body has the strength to fight this. Unless he's immune-compromised by something like FeLV/FIV (which unfortunately wouldn't be surprising in a tomcat :/), he should be able to fight it with supportive care.

Now, if the wound stops draining and becomes swollen, or he gets hot and lethargic, then he will need antibiotics. There are ways to get antibiotics without a prescription, and you can get proper dosing info from the online Merck vet manual, but it would be best to have a vet prescribe the meds if at all possible.

I think you should ask your vet to prescribe a round of antibiotics for the cat as a preventative measure, at least. Any time puss and draining is going on, infection is a real risk. Is there a Giant Eagle supermarket or drug store near you that participates in giving out free antibiotics with a script? If money is an issue, your vet can write a script or call it in to one of these stores for your pet, and you'll get it for free. Google free antibiotics along with the name of your city. You shouldn't have to spend time and money looking to get them on the black market on the internet--any competent vet should realize the risk of infection for a feral cat's wound and write you a script.
