I just did it to see if I could... and for all of the reasons you find when you google "giving up coffee".

For some curious reason, after a week and a half of withdrawal symptoms
, I actually feel much more energized all day long. So that could be not drinking coffee, or drinking all the substitutes I've been trying out.
That is a helpful and interesting article to read.  Everything seemed okay....until I read #13 on his list.....Yikes!!
Number 13 used to be lucky for me.....NOT anymore.

But seriously, if giving up coffee and trying the substitutes does help me with sugar levels or energy levels, than I think it is worth a try.  (I am all for substitutes, and think anything healthy is worth a try...but I wish I had more willpower)

I have to read up on those tannins that @cocheezie mentioned...since don't want a substitute that is not healthy.

I have never, ever understood decaff... why on earth would anyone do that to a cup of coffee?!!  It's the ultimate sacrilege of the beverage world!

And I refuse to give up coffee on principle..

Hi. I'm kutubira and I'm a coffee addict.

I tried to quit coffee once, and I regret that.

I can quit eating, but not coffee. I did not have any symptoms or something like that, but I was asking myself "What's missing from my life today?" It was coffee.

I didn't drink tea or cofee until I was about 20, and by the time I was in my 30s realised I didn't feel good when I was drinking it regularly. Pretty much stopped drinking coffee over 10 years ago:  maybe one cup every few weeks and usually decaf'.  Caffeine makes me feel edgy and a bit nauseous, and with coffee gives me a sore stomach.   It also makes it really hard for me to sleep.  I guess I'm over sensitive to it or something,  I prefer tea but try and stick to decaf' otherwise I get the same sick feeling I do with coffee.  Same happens with soft drinks.   Sometimes I like to go out for coffee with friends or family and have what my brother calls 'pointless' coffee - skinny decaf' latte.

I'm not saying that tannins are totally horrible little creatures that should be avoided completely. Some people have no problem with tannins. I've recently had to give up all tannins (basically anything red or dark) because of a very strict migraine trigger elimination diet. Tannins do affect some people headache wise, but not others. And, of course, anything in overabundance is not good. You will have to do your research and decide for yourself.

Thanks, @cocheezie.  I appreciate the extra information, because sometimes when I read articles, I get information, but then the comments people leave are more useful.

(I like to learn about things.  Yet get a little confused when one study will say "sugar substitutes" are good, and another one will say they are not advised.

I guess, like you say, nothing in over-abundance, and ultimately decide for myself.

Hmm....Somehow Mani sounds a little related to MServant's brother....in that decaf "pointless coffee" opinion.  Maybe that is just my own observation.

I would really like @roguethecat to make a "ruling" here, and offer a diplomatic opinion....but it might end up in mutiny...on decaf coffee.

I read number 13 too (and the whole article) I will say only one thing......."JUST SHOOT ME NOW!!!!"
@Di and Bob.....Before actually being shot,  should you perhaps ask for a last request....maybe a pot of coffee or something.

I think roguethecat would be okay with that.

Yep, I fear you are right @cat nap, they may be related.   I am surrounded by insults and disparaging remarks about my taste in hot drinks.  I may never go out socially again.
My last request might be for a Rooibos tea
rather than that lovely skinny decaf' just because others are so unsupportive, and even humiliated, when I ask for the decaf'.

Oh, oh...I don't know what to say...except "Yay... Decaf, skinny latte, please.

I'll order one next time, just to see if the crowd here is rough.

Hang in there, @MServant, I am sure that many people like your skinny decaf lattes...somewhere in the world.  Just have to keep looking.

Hey, I just looked up that Rooibos tea, and it looks pretty healthy.  thanks for the mention.

@cat nap    Rooibos is healthy but only because it's naturally caffeine free!  Not likely to be a big hit with regular caffeine junkies!
I drink it because you can drink it like regular black tea - with milk.  Tastes a bit smokey and doesn't have the dry finish that back tea has.

I am yet to find other decaf skinny latte fans but there must be some given it's an option in cafes  (even if the baristas give me a funny look when ordering).

there are no rules, we love each other on this site no matter what

oh, wait: decaf is definitely ruled out because they use formaldehyde in the decaf process and you do not, absolutely not, want any contact with that one. Despite that there's no point, it's like a toothless cat (no offense)...

just don't tempt me with real coffee right now, NEARLY TWO WEEKS abstinent!

My alternatives: teecino, matcha, guarana seed, mixtures thereof. Even good if mixed with coffee.

But I still got the migraine today. Despite no triggers. My Mom says it's the stress (she doesn't even know how there are 6 cats in the house right now instead of the 4 she knows about), I say it's the rain, but I'm not above taking ibuprofen so I'll be fine soon.

You could be lucky and it doesn't have anything to do with the caffiene, but hate to be the bringer of bad news - green tea (matcha) still has caffiene in, actually think it might have quite a lot in.

Good luck with the migrains and also with their not having any triggers which happen to be things you like.

So True !!

Thanks @roguethecat...I also heard bad things about 'decaf'...but was not sure. I will look into that, and those other products you mentioned.

I don't know about migraines, but sometimes when the weather changes, I do get headaches.  (I also get eye-strain, so have to go and get my eyes checked.)

Someone said keeping a 'migraine diary,' and what you are doing by eliminating possible triggers, hopefully helps.  Hope you feel better soon.

It's like those alcohol free beers. Just a crime against humanity in my opinion.

Green tea has always been a HUGE migraine trigger for me.

Don't knock decaf. After being on this elimination diet for a month so far, I'd kill for a decaf.

I know... that's why I have been drinking it...

I usually just blame my Dad for my migraines. His are much worse, but he knows most of his triggers.

Now I'm gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, no coffee, but if we take away any and all caffeine I won't have much humanity left...
 where was that great quote:
