I'm not exactly new here. I've lurked for a long time and joined back in June of last year but I'm rather skittish. The community here is so warm and friendly, so I feel comfortable coming to you with this. I'm so lost...
First off, my baby, Meejee, stopped eating Saturday and became very lethargic later that night. He didn't improve on Sunday so Monday morning, we took him to the vet. He is currently still in the hospital receiving fluids and antibiotics. They did blood work and said his liver and kidneys were a bit off (sorry, I can't remember the exact wording as my short term memory is poor and stress just makes it worse). It's not failure, that much I know. I spoke with the vet yesterday who said Meejee has improved, but he's not out of the woods. Meejee spiked a fever yesterday, which the vet said was unusual since he's on antibiotics, but that led him to do a blood smear. He discovered that Meejee has mycoplasmosis. Not sure if I got the term right or not. I know he said it's a blood parasite/infection which is easy to treat. He did say that it can cause all of the issues he's having other than the fact he has glucose in his urine. They've ruled out diabetes, though. The vet said that his kidneys are weird, but it's not renal failure. Meejee is also a little bit jaundiced, though they said it was part of the infection. I was asked about him being an outdoor cat,. He is strictly an indoor cat, as are all of my kitties. He's about to be six years old, so he's still a young one. I know you don't give any type of diagnosis here, I'm just hoping someone might have an idea what could be going on and what I might be able to do to help. He has been fixed, we feed them all grain-free Blue Wilderness dry kibble and wet foods such as Fancy Feast, Mio9, the real meat types from Meow Mix (actual fish meat and not pate), and sometimes I'll buy things like Wellness others that you can usually only find at the pet store or on Amazon. I had mentioned to the vet that Meejee has Siamese in him, as I know sometimes certain breeds can have issues that are more common to them than others.
Back to the kidney issue. The vet asked me about the possibility of him getting into something like lilies, grapes, or antifreeze. My boyfriend is known to eat grapes quite often, so it's very possible that one was dropped that he could have gotten. Could one grape cause the glucose in the urine? Just biting one? I've known grapes are bad for cats and dogs, and believe me, I fuss at anyone who drops them and doesn't pick them up immediately. If I see any on the floor, I grab them quickly because we have others that I know will play with them. I do have some toxic plants around but they're up high where the cats can't get to them. If they try, I'll know because they're booby trapped with a lot of whatnots around. That doesn't mean that a leaf hasn't fallen off that I didn't see (I pick up ALL plant leaves I see, dangerous or not). We do also eat apples around here, and while I'm very careful about the seeds, unfortunately, not everyone else in this house is. I did try looking up the glucose problem and found one site that said it can be caused by blood infections. However, I have no idea if what he has falls into that category. I assume there are different types cats can get, but I really don't know.
I guess I'm just hoping that if anything, maybe speaking with some of you can help me to think of other things around here that could have caused the glucose in his urine so I can let the vet know. I'll probably be slow to respond, and I apologize for that. I'm working right now and we'll be leaving later to hopefully pick up Meejee from the vet, which depends on how he's doing. They had talked about doing more testing. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, he has been tested for FeLV, FIV, and heartworms. All were negative. I'll answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. It's possible I left something out and being asked will jog my memory.
