I'm not exactly new here. I've lurked for a long time and joined back in June of last year but I'm rather skittish. The community here is so warm and friendly, so I feel comfortable coming to you with this. I'm so lost...

First off, my baby, Meejee, stopped eating Saturday and became very lethargic later that night. He didn't improve on Sunday so Monday morning, we took him to the vet. He is currently still in the hospital receiving fluids and antibiotics. They did blood work and said his liver and kidneys were a bit off (sorry, I can't remember the exact wording as my short term memory is poor and stress just makes it worse). It's not failure, that much I know. I spoke with the vet yesterday who said Meejee has improved, but he's not out of the woods. Meejee spiked a fever yesterday, which the vet said was unusual since he's on antibiotics, but that led him to do a blood smear. He discovered that Meejee has mycoplasmosis. Not sure if I got the term right or not. I know he said it's a blood parasite/infection which is easy to treat. He did say that it can cause all of the issues he's having other than the fact he has glucose in his urine. They've ruled out diabetes, though. The vet said that his kidneys are weird, but it's not renal failure. Meejee is also a little bit jaundiced, though they said it was part of the infection. I was asked about him being an outdoor cat,. He is strictly an indoor cat, as are all of my kitties. He's about to be six years old, so he's still a young one. I know you don't give any type of diagnosis here, I'm just hoping someone might have an idea what could be going on and what I might be able to do to help. He has been fixed, we feed them all grain-free Blue Wilderness dry kibble and wet foods such as Fancy Feast, Mio9, the real meat types from Meow Mix (actual fish meat and not pate), and sometimes I'll buy things like Wellness others that you can usually only find at the pet store or on Amazon. I had mentioned to the vet that Meejee has Siamese in him, as I know sometimes certain breeds can have issues that are more common to them than others.

Back to the kidney issue. The vet asked me about the possibility of him getting into something like lilies, grapes, or antifreeze. My boyfriend is known to eat grapes quite often, so it's very possible that one was dropped that he could have gotten. Could one grape cause the glucose in the urine? Just biting one? I've known grapes are bad for cats and dogs, and believe me, I fuss at anyone who drops them and doesn't pick them up immediately. If I see any on the floor, I grab them quickly because we have others that I know will play with them. I do have some toxic plants around but they're up high where the cats can't get to them. If they try, I'll know because they're booby trapped with a lot of whatnots around. That doesn't mean that a leaf hasn't fallen off that I didn't see (I pick up ALL plant leaves I see, dangerous or not). We do also eat apples around here, and while I'm very careful about the seeds, unfortunately, not everyone else in this house is. I did try looking up the glucose problem and found one site that said it can be caused by blood infections. However, I have no idea if what he has falls into that category. I assume there are different types cats can get, but I really don't know.

I guess I'm just hoping that if anything, maybe speaking with some of you can help me to think of other things around here that could have caused the glucose in his urine so I can let the vet know. I'll probably be slow to respond, and I apologize for that. I'm working right now and we'll be leaving later to hopefully pick up Meejee from the vet, which depends on how he's doing. They had talked about doing more testing. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, he has been tested for FeLV, FIV, and heartworms. All were negative. I'll answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. It's possible I left something out and being asked will jog my memory.

I'm sorry your post hasn't received any answers for so long!  I see that 21 people have read it, but obviously no one felt they had any answers for you, and the truth is, I have no answers either but I didn't want you to think nobody is reading your post.  Since he does have mycoplasmosis and blood infections can cause the sugar in the urine, hopefully the problem will go away once the medication has cured the infection.  It's a good thing your vet thought to do a blood smear, found it quickly and you are treating it.  How does the vet think he got that disease?  You said he is an inside only cat, but you have other cats as well.  Did the vet ask you to medicate them as well, or to get them tested for the mycoplasmosis?  You can actually be the teacher here by sharing what you have learned from all this.  It has been six days and we would love a progress report on Meejee and hope he is doing better.

Thank you very much for reading and for responding. They said it can be caused by infected fleas, ticks, or a bite from an infected cat. We haven't had a flea problem in a long time, but we do have the occasional flea hop off here from a friend that has had problems with them. I can't remember if I mentioned it above, but we also recently rescued a mother cat and her kitten. They were kept in a room by themselves for about a month away from the other cats, but I know it's still possible for fleas to travel. I took care of the fleas as soon as possible using coconut oil. There haven't been any fleas since, though I suppose it either came from them or the friend. The vet didn't see any reason to test the others at this time but rather to monitor them instead. Everyone else is doing great, eating well, active, and going to the litter box.

I was able to bring Meejee home from the vet Friday afternoon. He was being syringe fed because on all but one day there, he wouldn't eat on his own. I had to continue syringe feeding him Friday and Saturday, although on Saturday he did begin to show interest in food. He'd smell it and look a bit excited but then wouldn't eat. However, Sunday he began nibbling here and there on his own, even the dry kibble and some treats. I did do a bit of syringe feeding, though, just to be sure he was getting enough. On Monday, I stopped syringe feeding as he was eating on his own throughout the day. He is eating small portions several times a day now. On average, he weighs around six pounds. He had lost down to 5.1 pounds according to the vet's scales. I'm not sure how close my scales are to theirs, but he now weighs 5 pounds 6.1 ounces according to mine. He is on doxycycline, Prednisone, and Orbax. The vet did say on Friday when I picked Meejee up that his bilirubin had dropped and he wasn't as anemic. I think he said his iron had raised 28% (it was definitely in reference to not being as anemic). He has also been more active and will even respond when I run my fingers over the bristles of the cat brush. He loves that thing! Also, he is back to trampling over my arms when I'm working and will even give me the food look when he's hungry. I'm more hopeful now than I was, but am still afraid of a set back. I was so afraid I wouldn't get to see his big curious eyes staring at me from across the room or watch him rub his paws over his head like he does when he wants to be brushed or petted. He'll be on the Prednisone for at least a couple more weeks. I just dropped his dosage to once a day as instructed, and after a week, it'll be down to once every other day. He'll also be on the doxycycline for a couple more weeks, and I assume the same for the Orbax. It's in liquid form.
