We have a one and a half year old male cat who won't stop throwing up. It has been a problem for about 4 months. He started throwing up 2-3 times a day so we brought him in to see the vet. He had blood work done, which came back perfect, and we were also told he was constipated. So, he got an enema and laxatives, and seemed okay for a few weeks. Then he started throwing up daily again, so we brought him back to the vet, who said he was both constipated and possibly developing a food allergy. We were told to put him on a daily regime of Miralax and Royal Canin sensitive tummy wet food. That seemed to do the trick for a few weeks. We scaled back the Miralax and switched from Royal Canin sensitive tummy wet food to Natural Instinct grain-free wet food because of cost, and also incorporated kibble back into his diet (we have two cats and wanted them to be able to graze freely throughout the day). Just this past week he has been throwing up daily again, sometimes up to three times a day.

This morning we took away the dry kibble thinking he might be eating too much throughout the day, and also started up his Miralax again. Are we possibly missing anything else? Does anyone recommend a different kind of food? Please help! It is so sad to see our favorite little kitty always throwing up.

Have you had an X-ray done to see if there's some kind of blockage? I read on another cat website of a member whose cat was going through same thing and they finally found a blockage on intestine.

I just re-read your post. You say you started putting him back on dry kibble and then a week later the issues started up again.

I wonder if the kibble is partly the cause? Take it away again and see what happens. What brand of dry food is it?

Taking away the dry kibble is the best thing to do, especially for a constipated kitty.    He needs more moisture so dry kibble doesn't help.   I'd never feed kibble again to a constipated kitty.    I'd recommend adding water to his wet food to make sure he's getting even more moisture.

NV Instinct is a good choice though it will depend on what your kitty could be allergic to.    NV Instinct does have a limited ingredients turkey perhaps you could try.

I'd guess you'll have to narrow down what he is allergic to.   Maybe he's allergic to chicken or something else in the food.   NV Instinct doesn't have gums or carregeenan which some cats may have issues with.

Hopefully, others will have more suggestions for you.   I had a constipated older kitty and I know how difficult it is to see your baby go thru that.

Good luck.

Is he throwing up food or a clear liquid?

My cat, Ruby, threw up a clear liquid several times a week when she was eating a mix of IAMS canned and dry food.  The vet recommended stopping all dry food and feeding her Royal Canin hypo-allergenic canned food and the clear liquid vomiting completed stopped.   Occasionally she hacks up a furball, but they are very rare - every few months or so.

I know the veterinary food is much more expensive than grocery store food, but in Ruby's case, I am sticking with the pricier food since it solved her tummy issues.

Good luck finding a food combination that will work for both your kitty's tummy and your budget.

I can't advise you about food (I fed prey model raw), but Ritz throws up a fair amount (acid ingestion, we think). I have read that a limited ingredient food, perhaps with a novel protein like rabbit, might help if the cat has an allergy.
My question to you is: how soon after he eats does he throw up? Can you tell if the food is digested/undigested? Does he want to eat right after he eats?
PS: I do think eliminating the dry food is a good idea; dry food typically has more ingredients in it to which a cat can be allergic to than wet food. And if he continues to throw up, well that's another clue.

Just wanted to mention that it could be something in the NV Instinct food. It took a while but my cat is allergic to peas that are in any canned foods, not the protein source. She is allergic to a few other things in the cheaper foods but most of the grain free canned have peas in it so there is not much my cat can eat.

The only canned food she can eat is Wellness Turkey and Merrick Duck.

Hope your little guy starts feeling better soon.

I forgot to mention trying a raw food diet. I do rotational wet food/raw food. I buy the raw pre-made at an independent pet food store. You just thaw and place in bowl. That might help with his vomiting issue. My cats rarely throw up.
