Hey all,

Just need some suggestions and opinions on what to do.

On January 29th, my cat went for surgery to remove a sewing needle he had swallowed. After the surgery he developed Horner's syndrome which the vet may or may not clear up after some time.

However, the worst part is that he is now blind! The vets are unsure what would've been the reason for his blindness as his blood pressure remained normal when he was put under. The anasthesia used was Dexmedetomidine, Alfaxan, and Hydromorphone.

We took him home 2 days after the surgery, and he is on meds. (Omeprazole, Clindamycin, Clavamox, and a Fentanyl patch)

He is eating and also using the litterbox but we're unsure whether if it's either pee or poo. He walks around the house carefully and weakly, not like his usual self.

He did slightly vomit but I believe it was due to some of the meds causing nausea.

I dont know what to do right now, does anyone have any tips or experiences with their cats returning to normal?

I've searched numerous websites but the results are usually from many years ago.

I feel for your situation as it is difficult when a medical procedure goes wrong... please don't blame yourself for this. These things do happen. Although I've mostly heard about them due to dental procedures.

It sounds like mouth gags are the main risk factor. The good news is recovery rates are high at seventy percent according to this sturdy.

It sounds like you could use them if they used a mouth gag.

Let me know if that link works!

We had a similar experience some years ago.  Eponine, young healthy spayed female DSH - no problems with spay anesthesia.  She became ill one day - high fever, lethargic, painful abdomen.  Vet suspected an obstruction, so I okayed them opening her up.  They found nothing, but when she came out of anesthesia, she was blind, head-pressing, circling, a train wreck.  For two days she was almost unresponsive.  Then another vet in the practice stepped in and gave her "boatloads" of steroids - and she began to respond.  The fourth day, we picked her up at the emergency clinic (where she had been spending the night), and when we unzipped the carrier, she popped her head out and said hi.  She could see again!  (DH and I both burst into tears...)  She had a slow but steady recovery from that point.  She is *almost* totally normal now.  In bright sunlight you can see her pupils are slightly unequal in size, she tends to be a little clumsy, tends to overweight, and is easily startled.  But she gets the heebies all around the house when the mood strikes her, is rather ferocious in demeanor (one of her several nicknames is The Badger Princess), and otherwise is fine.  We never did figure out her original illness - the only diagnostic test we DIDN'T run was a toxicology screen!  The vet reported the anesthesia regimen to the FDA Adverse Effects database, and there were a number of reports of postop blindness with one or more of the drugs she used, so we don't really know what might have contributed from that angle either.  Needless to say, she has never been anesthetized again nor will be.  But here's hoping your kitty gets better - he might.  It took Ponine quite a while - weeks.  Good luck.
