Hi all,

I thought you all may be able to help me with a problem that I have with my 10/11 year old female cat. As she ages, she has developed a problem with digesting her food and regurgitates it almost every time she eats. I have tried every type and brand of food imaginable. I have also tried free feeding as opposed to small meals (she is currently free fed because she doesn't then gorge herself when she eats). She is overweight, so I don't want to give her something that will make her fatter. Any tips?

Thanks.

I agree with @myrnafaye about taking the cat to the vet and getting the blood workup, if you haven't already gotten one. Even if everything checks out okay right now, you'll have a baseline for later. It took us a few years to really appreciate our previous cat's blood tests she had done when she was 12 or 13 or 14--she was very old by that time and had low-level kidney and thyroid disease. Being able to compare the blood tests was very helpful.

That cat also had regurgitation problems: looking back, we're pretty sure they were related to IBD that she apparently developed over the years. She, too, was overweight, and I wish I'd known then that she probably would have gotten thinner and stayed healthier if we'd switched all her food over to something high-protein, low-carb, and grain-free rather than the diet dry food the vet had recommended. She was too frail for a thorough diagnosis to be sure she had IBD, but we figured out, very late, that it was probably the grains in her food that had been bothering her.

Since you are free feeding, I'm guessing she is eating kibble?  IF she has developed IBD, as in the case of LisaHE's cat, then kibble is not a good food to be feeding.  As she stated, it's the grains in the  food that cause issues.  Of course, you won't know for sure if that's the case until you rule out other issues with that visit to the Vet
.   Until you can get to the Vet, I'm wondering if giving her 1/4 of a Pepcid A/C might help.  That works on the amount of stomach acid, so not sure if it would help with regurgitating or not...it might.

Yah, vets do prescribe pepcid for vomiting - I guess its in the belief, whether accurate or not, that cats will vomit up stomach acid...I do agree that it is prudent to switch kitty to a canned food.  I have read that the worst canned food is better than the best dry food.  I cannot see where it is good for cats to have grains, unless it is for fiber, and then, good quality grain, like brown rice, or sweet potato.  Most of the time corn is used - the Worst! BugandWillow, take your kitty in soon.  Older cats also develop kidney issues, and often that is related with vomiting -
