My three year old tabby cat named Wally Gator has a fixation with chewing on plastic. He is well fed, very healthy and gets a lot of play time each day. He is very happy and gets along very well with the five other cats in my house. But anytime he finds a piece of plastic he chews on it and tries to eat it. Needless to say me and my family try to do everything we can to keep every piece of plastic a way from him but he still manages to find an old zip lock, the plastic bag the newspaper comes in, toys, the bags we take their litter out in, Tupperware, cups, anything! Does anyone know why my little Wally Gator does this, is their anything I can do to make him stop this! Thanks, and please let me know if anybody has any advice!

My cat likes to eat plastic bags.  I have no idea why she does this but she is healthy.  The only way I can get her to stop is to hide it all.  When you rule out any medical issues, you should hide all your plastic bags and upgrade to glassware.  Haha.  Or get child proof locks. Good luck.

Kismet is healthy, but she tries to eat plastic bags all the time. She's thrown up plastic once, but fortunately any other time she's only chewed some tiny holes into things and not eaten it. I just take to keeping all my plastic bags sealed in a big non-plastic bag so she can't get to them, and I don't leave anything lying around she could chew up or get into.

Eating and mouthing non-food items is known as pica:

Like you, it feels like we do everything to keep her from doing it, like keeping the cat occupied and feeding a good diet, but the only preventative measure that has actually worked is removing all the plastic from her presence.

My cat is this way except with rubber bands.  She has a strange obsession and will take whatever measures possible to get to them.  No rubber bands, hair bands, etc are allowed anywhere in my house except hidden away in a drawer or on the item they are rubber banding.  I'm always afraid that she'll get a hold of something secretly and get an obstruction as a result.  She's a healthy girl being fed a nice diet, and those are the only non food items that she eats.  I just have to be very good about keeping them out of her way.

Medically Wally is in great shape, he just had his yearly physical and shots, the only thing the Vet suggests is that he is bored or seeking attention. Between me and my sister we have five cats and it is a full time job caring for them and giving them each there own playtime, however Wally gets more playtime than any of them.

I have a plastic LICKER.  Mittens loves to lick plastic.  I put up a post a few weeks ago about this. Go figure.

We have a plastic licker too, but he licks everything (plastic is just most common because the hamper is his favourite..). He's anemic, and licking random things is a trait of anemic cats. It could be a behavioural thing or it could be a medical thing that can only be determined through blood testing.

Thanks for all the replies! It looks like the only thing I can do is keep all plastic products away from Wally. Cats can be more difficult than people, and with much bigger attitudes!

I have to disagree with that, i find people to be more difficult and have bigger attitudes then cats
