Hallo everybody

well, I have been searching the internet frantically for the past few days, trying to get an idea that will work with my cat climbing our tree.  My cats are mostly indoor cats, but we have a very safe yard for them, where they cannot go anywhere outside.  Only one problem.....we have a huge tree, next to a building.  And they love to climb that tree, then get onto the roof of the building and walks around there.  I have tried a plastic kind of skirt around the main trunk of the tree.....did not work

I have tried a skirt of chicken wire around the trunk....did not work

I have tried cover most of the tree with foil....apart from us laughing ourselves to pieces cause it looked like an alien...it did not work ...

then i sprayed the whole tree trunk and much of the branches with a cat deterrent spray....so bad that i could actually smell it when i open my back door....they obviously did not think it was that bad.....cause it did not work either....

De clawing is absolutely NO options.....

I know I can keep them indoor...but they love following me while i work in the garden...play around etc....and as i said...my yard is extremely safe for them.....i just need some advice on that tree!!!!!!

Thank you all

The usual way, for any animals, is to wrap tree trunk by material impenetrable for claws (aluminum roll from hardware store or lumberyard comes in mind, 2-3 ft (60-90 cm) wide, not aluminum foil). Placing it high enough that cat couldn't jump up above it.

Another, more cumbersome version could be free standing fence around the tree, with top 1.5-2 ft (45-60 cm) bent outside (negative angle for a climber) at 45-60 degrees, this bent top part made from flexible polyolephyne mesh (? - sturdy plastic, not strings of nylon). Unlike chicken wire or chain-link fence it gives up, moves under the paws and animals don't like this.

Third, more restricting and supervised option would be using enclosure (screened deck or porch, or free standing mesh tent with bottom secured to the ground). Not cages, they scare cats.

Luckily for me, both of my cats, past and present, are not climbers at all (I have unprotected large tree at backyard).

Best wishes to you and your cats!

I would just like to give you all an update on my tree climbing prediciment. I finally found a solution!!!! And the thing I am most proud of is that it did not come from a shop. Well, the material did, lol. I will try and post a picture later. But for niw, my cats are totally safe in the garden. They are soooo happy. Love to watch them play outside in the garden.
