Goody day,

My cat just gave birth a while back and, now the kittens are 1 month old.  one of the kittens was trying to vomit but there was nothing coming out.

Should I be worried or is there anything that might cause this reaction. note that the kittens are still breastfeeding.

THANKS.

Can you maybe be more specific about what this looked/sounded like? Is his or her breathing okay? Have there been any other changes in his other behavior?

hi and welcome to The Cat Site (TCS)!

i'm not experienced in this area, but i will request the assistance of a couple of kitten experts. @catwoman707, @StefanZ -- may i request your expertise for the OP (original poster)?

okay. so the kittens are one month/8 weeks old now. the kitten that was trying to vomit -- is he a healthy weight? i'm not sure if you have a scale that weighs in grams, and have been weighing the kittens daily. so, is he (at least) looking close in size and weight to his siblings? are you sure he's actually getting milk? because sometimes a kitten will suckle but not actually be taking in any milk.

are there any signs/symptoms of illness in any of the kittens or the momma cat? is momma cat eating well? she needs to eat well in order to keep her strength up while nursing the kittens.

it sounded like she was about to vomit it lasted a few seconds then she was fine, she's always playful that why I was surprised everything in the kitten is normal.

she's a little thin than the rest of her brothers and sister, but she's always the first and the last to breastfeed, 2 weeks before the mamma cat had mastitis and now she finished her meds and everything is normal could it cause this issue, also she's drinking and eating normal.

Mastitis usually has a bacteria involved, either strep or e-coli.

If either was involved with mom's mastitis it can very well be harmful for continued nursing for the kittens, easily passing along these bacteria to them.

If you do not know I would give the vet a call and ask the receptionist to check the records and tell you.

It may have been a case where there was no bacterial involvement, not usually but I would think the vet would have been sure you knew to pull the babies and feed them yourself while she was healing.

It is HIGHLY unusual and suspicious for a 4 week old to vomit, or attempt to if kitten is not sick.

It may be that there was something she got in her mouth like a small bit of toy stuffing for instance that was sitting in her throat, but I would most definitely be watching her and the others like a mama hawk for a bit.

If she/they did acquire bacteria from mom the earliest it is caught the better and they can be put on antibiotics asap and recover fine.

Did mom just recently finish her meds?
