My cat Frannie is 8 years old and has been primarily an outdoor cat. She started out as an indoor cat but eventually moved out fully because my other kitty (a rescue) preferred the outdoors and they are very bonded.

We noticed she was looking thinner several months back and suspected her kitty-sister (Matilda) was eating her food. We placed her food higher, where Matlida could’t get it, but noticed no change. Then we thought she may have worms, so we used an OTC dewormer. Again, no change. We took her to the vet this week and they found out she is severely anemic, has an enlarged liver and spleen, some form of cardiac disease, and in general, is a very sick kitty. :( She tested negative for Feline Leukemia and an ultrasound showed no cancer. She did test positive for Hookworm, though we dewormed her just a couple months back. The vet thinks she may have Haemobartonellosis, and we sent out labs for that which will be back Friday. She is being treated with Prednisone and Panacur right now, and a medicine for Haemobartonellosis called Doxycycline is being made at a compounding pharmacy but won’t be ready until later today or tomorrow morning.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Right now she is inside, kenneled the majority of the time in part so my active kids (5 and 2) don’t bug her. We let her out to roam when she’s up for it but I’m worried about my kiddos catching the hookworm. I’m not sure the likelihood of that. She finishes her first round of Panacur Saturday and our plan is to ditch the kennel and let her out full time and a permanent house cat.

Unfortunately, she also separated from her kitty-sister, who is still outside. We have discussed trying to bring her in, but we were advised to keep them separate until she is well to prevent the spread of the illness. Last night after much brushing and treats, she went and laid against the back glass door while Matilda laid against it from the outside, like they were trying to lay together through the door. They have to be separated but I’m unsure how to make is easier on both.

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated, TIA!

I don't have any experience with either of these, so am mainly just bumping this thread back up.

As far as you or your children catching the hookworm, did your Vet tell you that it's passed via feces?  So what I would do is clean her litter box as quickly as you can, then wash your hands thoroughly.  Wash thoroughly after petting her too, just in case.

that she makes a full recovery
