How do you stop a cat from biting?

We've had our cat since October '14.  We got her from a friend who took her in when she was pregnant, so she doesn't know the cat well either.  The cat had her kittens - my daughter took two of the kittens, we adopted the mother.  She's very lovey, but then she will turn and bite.  She's very smart; she plays catch and fetch; knows the word no, etc.  But, this biting thing is nerve-wracking.  Anybody have any suggestions?

Welcome to TCS!

It sounds like she might be over-stimulated.  With some cats it takes getting to know their warning signs (which may be few and brief) to figure out when they have had enough.

mwallace065's questions might help us give more of a detailed answer.

Felix was a biter when we adopted him. He had an unknown past as well. We would pet him and he'd be purring away, and then he'd bite with no warning. We'd very firmly tell him "No!" and then ignore him for the next five minutes. He wanted attention more than anything, and after about three weeks, he learned his manners.

Ramona was another story. She was raised in a house with children who were not taught to respect animals. Therefore, the only way she knew to get her point across was to bite or scratch. I took the same approach with her. It took much longer. We had to work on communicating with each other. She learned that if she wanted to be put down on the ground to simply lean forward and we'd let her go, for example. It was slow-going and it took about a year to calm her down.

Sometimes we are petting her and she will turn around and bite - sometimes she will kick at the same time.  She will also give us  a sign that she will bite, we then stop the petting or whatever we're doing.  She has rarely bitten without being petted.

Our Kiki does pretty much the same thing as yours - and, we are doing the same thing; telling her "no" when she does bite.  She knows what that means and will stop.  You've given us hope that, in time, she will stop the biting.

I also believe she may have also been mistreated by "hands".  She watches your hands constantly, as if she's waiting for you to do something bad with them.  Her former owner threw her and another cat in her house out, which is the reason she got pregnant at 9 months.  I assume she was in heat.

does he does it when you are petting him?
When cat is about to be fed you can do anything to him even rub his tummy. Otherwise, if you just go to pet him as you are walking by he try's to bite you. He was an orphaned feral, and was so fierce I had to declaw him, which I do not agree with, in order to not put him down. He attacked everything and everyone, claws and teeth both. I believe he never learned the social graces.
