So, I'm having a kind of strange problem with my two cats, Ghost and Vanish. Ghost is 6 years old, Vanish is 7 months old. Both are neutered males. Ghost is deaf, and I'm pretty sure that's why all of this is such a big problem.

I got Vanish, and ever since September, he will not leave Ghost alone. Ghost seriously cannot get two seconds of peace on most days. Ghost hisses at Vanish, but he is completely relentless. He wants to play with Ghost and Ghost does not want any part of it. I realize that it's the equivalent of forcing a 40 year old to live with a toddler in close quarters. I'm 36 and I would not want some baby jumping on me when I'm trying to sleep, or worse, go to the bathroom.

That leads me to what I want to ask about today.

Ghost was at the emergency vet this weekend with what I was told was impacted stool. They flushed it out, and he is mostly fine right now. My concern is about how the stool got impacted. I've read that it can get impacted if the cat is holding it in, and Vanish enjoys guarding litter.

It's more than that, though. Vanish is completely obsessed with litter. He hears the scratching sound of someone scooping it or Ghost digging in it and he has to run and attack the person scooping it or... Ghost when he's doing his business. :/

I don't know if this is actually what happened, he might have just had a stomach bug, or at least, that's what my vet said... he DID have a fever and threw up... but I've been observing Vanish interacting with Ghost in the litter the other day and it has left me a little more than concerned.

Until I figure out what to do, I've been separating them when we go out at night, when we go to bed at night and whenever I can't really be paying at least a little attention to them... because it seems the MOMENT I turn my back, Vanish is on top of Ghost and Ghost is hissing.

I'll confess that until a few days ago, we only had one litterbox. We actually tried two, but the cats picked one and went in it, leaving the other one completely untouched.

We now have two litterboxes now, one in the front of the house and one in the back. Vanish gets in these "moods" and he will not leave Ghost alone when he gets like that. He hears scratching in the litter and he will run from litterbox to litterbox preventing Ghost from using it and rolling in the litter. I would TRY to put a litterbox upstairs, but the upstairs of my house is very small and very weirdly laid out, so I can't even think of a single place I could put it.

I've tried the Feliway, that made Vanish more aggressive (which I've actually heard it can do) and I tried playing with them with catnip toys, but this also seemed to make Vanish very aggravated.

I cannot put a litter box in a place that Vanish can't get to, because Ghost cannot jump very high and Vanish can get, well, ANYWHERE.

Is this something that Vanish might grow out of? It's been barely a month since he's been neutered, and he's not even a year old yet.

Is there something else that I can do that might help this situation?

Ghost, right now, associates Vanish with getting jumped on, and it's really making him skittish. I'm trying to break that as well. I give them treats every time they sit nice together, but Vanish still REALLY wants to jump on Ghost. I'm kind of at my wits end.

If anyone has any advice, I'm definitely willing to listen. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I guess this will sound too simple - do you have more than one litter box?  I would have at least three for two cats.  That way, a litter box will always be available.

We've currently got 2, but that's a very recent thing.  I don't have a really big house, so I'm not really sure where I would even put a third one. Maybe in the back bathroom. Regardless of that, though, the kitten's hearing is so good that when he hears the older cat scratching, he will come running from WHEREVER he is. The only time he doesn't bother is when he's sleeping.

I sympathize with you about the small house.  My daughter and I both have small houses, so I understand about limited space.  Maybe a little Rescue Remedy in the water will calm the kitten down.  My daughter has two kittens, now almost 6 mos. old.  They are crazy around her little house, so I told her to try the RR.  I'll let you know if it helps. Might even try it with my cat - she's a biter.  Cat Site has really given me a lot of insight.

I tried rescue remedy on Ghost (the older cat) when he was much younger. I had a very similar situation when I was trying to introduce him to my resident cat at the time, Shady (the little guy in my avatar ^_^) ... it didn't work on Ghost, but I might try it on Vanish. I still have some.

So far, what I've been trying is separating them at night and when we're gone for long periods of time so the cats have some alone time to go and do their business in private. This is very important for Ghost because he's deaf and he gets startled easily. It's working so far, so hopefully it will continue to work.

I want to thank you guys for your comments on this, by the way. I realize it's kind of a strange issue, seeing how Ghost is deaf.
