I recently adopted a new kitten.

He is the sweetest ball of energy, I just adore him!

But sadly, the resident cat hates him.

I know I should separate him, and put his smell on some pieces of cloth and spread it around for my resident to become used to him.

But, I do not know where to house the kitten. I am alone during the day, and the kitten cries if I leave his room, but so does my resident cat when I go into the kitten's room.

What should I do? I would hate to leave the new kitten crying, but I equally hate leaving my baby of 3 years alone crying.

Welcome to TCS!

Generally we recommend following the steps as outlined in this article: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/introducing-cats-to-cats.

With cats; patience can be essential in having them learn to live together.  This can seem especially true when you are bringing a kitten (energy) into a home with an older (calmer) cat.   It's completely normal for cats to need a few months to settle in together.  It's often better to take things slow than to have to start over several times; so I recommend proceeding from step to step slowly and back up a step if necessary.  It may pay off in the long run.  I think for now; someone will be upset.  There may not be much you can do about that; but it should be temporary.

Hopefully they integrate soon and this phase is just a memory for you before you know it!

Hello . Sorry to hear that your other cat does not like the wee kitten . Give it time as we have been there and they will slowly get on . It happened with our cat for 2 to 3 weeks they really never got on and the 4th week we both thought that we would be better to find the wee one a new home as much as it broke us up to bits then out the blue we find them together at first just sitting near each other a wee bit with out the wee one looking scared then they got closer .They might not all ways see eye to eye and now with the young one having had and still as her family the older one stays a way a wee bit but still near . It is the young ones 3 boys and father that give our old one trouble at times now but only some times .If there mum thinks they are out of order she goes for them so in a big way she is looking out for the older one. We are really happy that we never gave a way the wee one . Let me know how things go . From Mary
