Help! My almost 2 year old cat will not let me near her paws when its time for grooming. My 3 year old Sophie had no problems with having her nails cut. Lola since the beginning of me bringing her home would get aggressive to the point where shed bite, growl, and scratch me when Id try to cut her nails. Lola was what youd call in "transition" she was almost feral when I adopted her. Really aggressive in the beginning. Now shes a ham. I cannot afford to bring her to the vet every week or so for her grooming. That and although my vet handles pets who are or were feral and who display aggressive behavior and are difficult.Shes beginning to associate her grooming with her vet visits not good. Shed never had a problem with the vet til I bought her in for grooming. My vet is a very caring human being. Very empathetic and professional. We have tried everything but sedation. Calming sprays, treats, desensitization, exposure all to no avail. Im beginning to hate and dread our visits to the vet I think more than Lola. Ive heard people suggest sedation with their pets on here. I have spoken to my vet about trying this approach but am still concerned. Any tips and/or suggestions? Oh and now since I have trouble cutting Lola's nails my eldest Sophie is getting difficult. I had no problems whatsoever with grooming Sophie in the past. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are tricks.  The first and easiest, is to be two: one holds the cat at the chest, the other cuts.   One alternative is holding by the scruff.  If you are alone, a good alternative is to do it when the cat is sleepy, and cut just one nail at a time, maximum 2.  So she never really notices what is happening.

More advanced tries is to wrap the cat in a thick, but yet soft towel.  Perhaps even one fleece (fleece is nice and cozy for cats).  Wrapped up like in a old Rome toga, they cease resistance, and you can cut, one paw at a time.

There is also a possibility to cover their eyes and head, alike on birds of prey in training for hunt.   I know there was a british firm making even especial masque which should cover their eyes, I even saw such a masque in my vets office.  I think he told he used it sometimes.

It is surely possible to just lay a scarf on the cat.  Train at first on a dummy, after it on your friendliest resident...

Train the wrapping on your friendliest resident too, at first.  So you know all the tricks and ropes, before you must do in in sharp version on a cat who is vary and in defensive mode...

Good luck!

StefanZ thank you for your comment and suggestions. When I say Ive tried everything, Ive tried everything. We call Lola while wrapped up in a thick towel a burrito. A friend suggested it last year it worked somewhat. She still continues to struggle, growl and her paws, nails go all over the place. I have difficulty with my back and can only do so much. Lola weighs about 9 pounds give or take. I live alone. Only one who helps me out is my boyfriend. The issue with grabbing her, I cannot pet or get to close to either of my cats when grooming them because of the excessive shedding. This means I have to take long breaks in between grooms or wait til the boyfriend has a day of. Im seeing an allergist for this Im not allergic to my cats just the allergens that gets on their coats and excessive shedding. I digress. I usually do a lot of reading, books, sites, forums. That and my vet I know can make this situation more tolerable for Lola and I. Again thank you for the tips!
