Hi Folks,

I'm basically at my wits end. I CANNOT get drops into my cats ears. She is constantly, CONSTANTLY digging at them (right one in particular) and I can't help. What can I do?

Important background: Magdalena is a 7 year old (mostly reformed) semi feral stray I took in 18 months ago after finding her stuck in a storm drain. After clearing her of mites, she has had reoccurring yeast and bacterial ear infections. She was also either hit by a car or fell from a significant height and stuffed a hip/spinal fracture that never healed right. She limps slightly, can't jump, and won't let anyone touch her lower body (ie, I cannot pick her up without causing a fuss and feeling terribly as she limps worse for 2 days after). Her disability also has left her prone to chronic UTIs that, if not treated early enough, lead to bladder inflammation.

So okay, ear drops. A recent trip to vet revealed no ear infection so she's having some allergy issues. Though good news, I still can't get basic zymox in her to clear whatever waxy build up is upsetting her.  Picking her up is a struggle. Bribing her with treats doest work. Burritoing her doesn't work (she needs to hands to hold her still).   Coaxing her doesn't work. No matter what I try, she swipes and growls and digs her nails into my skin. She's otherwise NEVER feral but she turns from a reformed street kitty on a dime when its ear drop time.

I deal with, and manage, a lot with this cat. I love her, but I can't crack ear care and I feel like I'm failing her. The itching is only getting worse :(

I live in NYC (no car) so taking her to the vet every day isn't an option. What can I do :( She also has liquid pain medication that's supposed to be absorbed sublingually. I'm sure you can guess how well that's going... :(

Tough situation! I would try a change in diet to something limited ingredient. If it is allergies, an antihistamine such as claritin might help. I would try both, immediately.

My cat is on claritin and has not had an ear infection since.

As for ear drops, buy some one cc syringes without needles as that might make it easier to administer. I use syringes for ear meds as otherwise it is too difficult to get them in.

Make sure find the right dosage of claritin! And don't buy claritin D.

My cat gets half a tablet or 5 mg.
