Hi all,

Having an issue at the moment. We got a kitten about a month ago and as we suspected our older cat doesn't like him. The biggest issue we are having is that our older cat won't is the litter tray and we have found about 4 times that she has went upstairs.

She urinated on our bed twice so we have ended up having to lock them out of our bedroom because of it. We found a little poop on our spare room and tonight we have found both in the same spot. She must be using the litter tray as we can see the difference from the size from the kitten to the older cat however my partner is becoming extremely annoyed at this happening. I am also at my whits end

We have tried placing two litter trays down in the same place but the kitten is just in there messing around. We really don't want to put a litter tray upstairs as our house has carpets where as the litter tray currently is on wood flooring.

Really not sure what to do about this now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

This is becoming a nightmare. She will sit in a room with him but mostly spends her days upstairs. We don't want to end up having a situation where one cat lives upstairs and the other downstairs.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'm pretty desperate right now.

Steph x

Sorry. It's the older cat who is doing the peeing and pooping outside the litter box. We never separated them we were advised not too. She had seen the kitten and just hissed and growled and they did have a bit of swipe with each other x

when you say never separated them you talking about the kitten and the cat right, sorry i am just little distracted from something else. when you first got the kitten, you just throw the two together and let them works it out themselves?

No we didn't just throw them together. The vet advised us to let the kitten have a look around the home before letting them come face to face. After about an hour the kitten went upstairs to find the cat. He instantly went towards her as he was used to other cats ( he had been in a pen with another kitten ). She instantly hissed and growled at him but that was it until she came downstairs and chased him.

Most people have said she is trying to punish us or she is having a tantrum with the fact of the new kitten being here but things have improved as she doesn't hiss or growl as much anymore but like I say we are getting worried with this while situation now

it best to have the introduction to be slow and gradual, to me what the vet told you to do just seem little fast  as for the litterbox problems, the older cat may be stress having the new kitten in the house, someone with more experience can help you with that, but in the meantime try reintroducing them here a good article written by a certified cat behaviorist http://www.catbehaviorassociates.com/how-to-introduce-a-second-cat/

I think we are going to get an enclosed litter box and put it upstairs for a while and hope she will use it
