Hello all! My Mom adopted a 9 month old cat from Petsmart less than a week ago. She came with all her shots and she was spayed recently because her belly is still shaved from the surgery. The strange thing is she looks pregnant! My question is could she have been pregnant when she was spayed? Could there still be kittens in there?

She might have been pregnant. Many shelters will spay even largely pregnant cats, feeling that it's better to abort the kittens than to put them to sleep after they're born. The uterus is removed during a spay so there couldn't be any kittens left in there.

Or she might just be a chubby girl ;).

Thanks for your reply. Shes not really that chubby....She's a healthy looking slender cat with "side bulges" like a pregnant cat. Hopefully there isn't a health issue. She's so sweet!

If she's got a defined waist, her weight is probably fine, but thin cats can sometimes look like they have big bellies when looking at their topline because their ribcage juts out. If she seems bloated below the ribcage, things like parasites can cause tummy bloating. Your mom can always contact the Petsmart or the rescue/humane society that was adopting out through Petsmart for vet records, and some will cover the cost of a vet visit within X weeks of adoption.

I agree it could be a parasite. I am certain the rescue group gave her a dewormer but sometimes it just takes one more dose before they are gone. Or perhaps they gave her meds for one parasite but she has another. Usually a rescue will recommend an immediate vet visit (some shelters even cover the cost!) just to rule things out. You could take a stool sample in and have it checked for a parasite. Good luck!
