Hi, I'm new to the site & my vet has no openings until Tuesday. I'm hoping y'all could read this description to let me know if I need to go in to the hospital or not:
Background: Neko is a 13 year old Bombay mix, 6.5 pounds (she was not the runt, she's always been underweight). She had a general exam recently; teeth good, urine weird (only 1 indicator of a UI, as well as some slight particulates in the sample). She was given antibiotics for the possible infection. She also has been biting her fur out for the past 2 years. I brought her in for an exam because she looks like a shorn ewe throughout her whole underbelly, inner thighs of all four legs, and now outside on her left rear haunch. She was also regurgitating somewhat frequently (off the shelf Science Diet "senior health" dry food - she won't eat wet).
The vet put her on hypoallergenic food, diagnosing the fur biting and regurgitation as an allergic reaction. There have been no behavioral issues nor environmental changes in the past year. Our next visit will be dental cleaning and a blood test. We forwent the blood test last visit because of finances. We also haven't done an xray on her in 2 years or so. Over her whole life, she has found plastic grocery bags, garbage bags, and shrinkwrap material, and chewed on them (including swallowing often when I don't catch her). We've done our best to keep things put away or out of reach, but she'll climb into the bathroom trash can to chew on the liner, or climb up shelves, etc. She's very wiry.
So, the current problem is that she's vomited 2x in the past 14 hours, regurgitated once, and has had 2x hairball vomits in the past 2 days, once per day. The hairball matter has very little fur, but each had some undigested christmas wrapping ribbon (thin strips) that she had eaten without my wife or I noticing. After regurgitating earlier today, I let her relax a little bit, then fed her 4-5 individual kibbles every hour. There is plenty of water and she usually drinks a lot every day (including today). After a few hours of small-volume feeding, she let out a very low, loud moan and started heaving. I moved her carefully off the carpet and she vomited the mostly-digested hypoallergenic food. There was a lot of stomach acid as well.
There are really few online resources to help diagnosis, so I wanted to ask a group of folks who seem pretty supportive of these kinds of questions. I'll be bringing her into the vet (at the very least on Tuesday), but ultimately my question is if these signs point to an emergency trip or not.
