I've posted here previously about my kitten with diarrhea. Nothing seemed to be helping him. He tested negative for worms/parasites but was still treated for them. I switched his food a few times but figured that wet food might be contributing to his poop problem so ive been keeping him on dry food mostly. A friend told me that when her cat had diarrhea, her vet suggested canned pumpkin. I have been giving it to him, a teaspoon twice a day for 2 days now. He LOVES it! and it has seemed to help so far. His stools are not liquidy like they were but still mushy.  How long do you think I should be adding this to his diet? I don't mind the mushy poop so much since hes still very active and has not lost any appetite. and he still drinks his water, but hes so young and he gets the poop all stuck to him and slides his bum on the floor after he gets out of his box. so its usually a mess and requires a mini bath a few times a day which he hates.

As long as he is eating enough complete cat food I don't think there is a limit on how long he takes the pumpkin.  Has he been checked for all possible parasites?  There is a PCR fecal test that has to be sent out and takes several days to a week to get the results back.  It checks for those parasites that the float test done in the vet's office wont find.  Wet food in and of itself won't cause diarrhea.  Of course it is possible that an ingredient in the food is causing it but if there is no ingredient common to the foods that you have tried then it probably isn't that.

I am taking him back to the vet on Monday morning since he will be 8 weeks and needs shots. I will mention that test. but if it was that, wouldn't the pumpkin not help his stools?

also, how much to those test range? that seems expensive

so far food food this is what he has had:

- when I got home, his previous owner was feeding him Iams CAT food and he was only 6 weeks... I found that odd and switched him to Kitten chow that I already had at home. 4 days later, he started with the diarrhea. I am not sure if he was just used to the Iams cat food and the kitten food was upsetting his tummy  or what...

- then the vet told me to give him wet food so I tried grain free Wellness Core which he ate but it didn't help

- then I got a can of I/D prescription food from the vet which didn't help much either. I gave each food a few days before I tried something else

- finally I switched him back to Iams figuring that if he didn't have the diarrhea when he was with his pervious owner, and he was eating that, then maybe that's what agreed with him. and I also added the pumpkin which, like I said, seems to be helping.

You can also feed Weruva's Pumpkin Patch Up supplement:
You can give small amounts of pumpkin daily.

Maybe your kitten has a sensitive tummy? Give a limited ingredient food a try for a few weeks, not a few days. Nature's Variety Instinct is one brand.
