Now that my cat has forgiven me for having her spayed (Soon as she was up to it she went upstairs and weed on my bed, just the once, to make a point I think), she is very keen on rubbing the sides of her face on my face. Is this some kind of scent marking thing?

Yes, I believe its affection. My Cheeto head buts me, plus rubs his face against mine all the time. Plus my new little guy Charlie, licks my face (yuck), but its their sign of affection. Yeah, for lovey dovey kitties.
